The 31st of January has (nearly) passed, you’ve paid your taxes, it’s a fresh start, a new you. You are the owner, and you are the business.

EMBASSY’s Member Show is back and is calling all sole traders, freelancers, small business owners, self-employees and artists to submit their returns to:

SALON TRADERS

Leaning into the foundations of our basement, we are embracing the ways in which EMBASSY aims to provide stability to its members, a base from which to build from.

As in previous tax years the EMBASSY members show will be an all-encompassing opportunity to test as well as showcase your work, in the company of a diverse, friendly and supportive audience, to celebrate your practice, and to support the continued running of EMBASSY.

Anything you wish to showcase is welcome: Completed or work in progress, finished, unfinished, orchestrated or spontaneous.

Work in ALL MEDIA will be accepted. There is NO THEME for works submitted.

ALL INFO ON HOW TO APPLY IS IN OUR BIO!

Current members may submit one artwork for exhibition (+ one performance proposal) as part of their annual membership. New or lapsed members can join or renew their membership of EMBASSY, which is priced on a sliding scale. Please see link above!

*pls note you don’t actually have to be registered as a sole trader to take part in the members show lol

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH 21st JAN 6-8PM

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH is a space for discussion around video art, youtube videos, animation, tiktoks, documentaries - any kind of image that moves.

You can bring your own artworks to chat about, or anything you’ve been inspired by recently that you want to discuss if you don’t make moving image work.

It’s open to any quality of video and any kind of artist, or just anyone interested in engaging with moving image in a warm, communal space.

If you’re wanting to share work, you can show up to 10 minutes! Bring clips, excerpts, sketches, unfinished pieces, or fully realised works, and let us know what kind of feedback you’d like. After each showing, there’s time for responses and discussion, though you’re also welcome to show something without commenting. This is a space for all types of feedback, from casual chats to critical engagement—whatever suits you.

If you have no work to share, simply come to watch and offer feedback! Or bring videos you want to have a chat about that might have inspired you recently.

A digital projector, computer, and speakers will be available. You can bring a USB on the day, but it’s preferred to share films in advance via a pre-existing link (e.g., YouTube or Vimeo).

Please email links to [email protected] with the subject “Neighbourhood Watch.”

Can’t make it? No worries! NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH is a regular monthly event at EMBASSY, every third Tuesday!

Call for Submissions! 🏠 🍪 🎥

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH is a regular screening environment for video makers, originally hosted at the Newbridge Project and devised by artists Aaron Dawson-Riley and Liberty Hodes. As a part of BISCUIT TIN Moving Image Festival, EMBASSY is inviting Neighbourhood Watch up to Edinburgh to host a session.

Neighbourhood Watch will take place on 7/12/24 at EMBASSY Gallery. The event offers a dedicated environment for showing, watching and discussing video art, affording levels of engagement that aren’t currently offered by like-driven social media.

This will be an opportunity to show digital moving-image works of all kinds, whether that be computer animation, documentary, abstract video or anything in between. Neighbourhood Watch aims to provide a space for divergent video-making practices, outside of our current channels of media distribution.

All types of video art are welcome, from lo-res clips filmed on your phone to more ‘produced’ hi-res works. Similarly, it’s a space open to all artists, whether they work exclusively in video or not, and anyone interested in viewing contemporary moving-image works.

Anyone can share work of up to 10 minutes or come, view and offer feedback. There is no application! Participants can show clips, excerpts, sketches, half-finished things or fully realised pieces- with an opportunity to briefly say what kind of feedback they’re hoping to get. After showing each work, there will be a moment for others to respond and offer their thoughts. It’s also fine to show something and not talk about it too. This will be a space for all kinds of feedback, allowing for both casual discussion and critical engagement – whatever you want to get out of it.

There will be a digital projector, computer and speakers set up.

You can bring along a USB on the day, though it is preferred that films are shared in advance, preferably by a pre-existing link (youtube or vimeo for example)

please email these to to: [email protected]

FULL INFO IN BIO 🍿

Can’t make the date?? Don’t worry! NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH will be a regular MONTHLY event at EMBASSY starting from January! So see you then!

EMERGING STRATEGIES

Some pics from the first meeting of the co-hort of Emerging Strategies, our programme of artist workshops, talks and participatory sessions exploring professional practice.

Last month we welcomed everyone into our space, made lots of badges, had dinner supplied by the wonderful and began to collectively imagine what the next 9 months of development could look like...

Lots of pictures (and music?!) to share from our first session soon 👂 ✨

EMBASSY are proud signatories of the Scottish Cultural Sector Day of Action statement. We demand FULL ARMS EMBARGO after a year of genocide aided by weapons made here in Scotland.

EMBASSY reaffirms our support and endorsement of PACBI (the Palestinian campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel) and our commitment to the liberation of Palestine and Lebanon.

Today we call upon all Scottish Cultural organisations to join us and speak out.
🕊️ 🕊️ 🕊️
Use your platforms to stand in solidarity with all of those affected by Israeli agression. We demand that larger cultural institutions in Edinburgh and the rest of Scotland, respond to their workers, artists and audiences and take action.

We want to restate that any groups organising around Palestinian liberation are welcome to use EMBASSY for free, whether that be for workshops, meetings or simply as a space to make posters and banners.

Art Workers for Palestine Scotland are holding a PACBI campaign meeting tonight at 7pm. DM them for zoom link, all are welcome to attend.

MOVING IMAGE OPEN CALL

We are pleased to announce an open call for the third edition of Biscuit Tin, our artists moving image festival, taking place in December.

This year, the festival will take place over three days; Friday 6th, Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th of December. Biscuit Tin is a paid opportunity, with the application process made as low labour as possible.

EMBASSY wants your abandoned experiments, unwatched works on your youtube channel, videos lying dormant on dusty USB sticks. Biscuit Tin provides a space to screen moving image artworks that have previously not found a place to be exhibited. The festival explores hidden areas of artist practice and research, the weird stuff you find rattling around in the biscuit tin instead of chocolate digestives.

While "success" most often coincides with visibility and exposure, "failure", in the broad sense of the word, is harder to tally. We invite you to share those journeys which resulted in unfinished projects, and offer a chance to get together over the non-successes.

Full application details linked in bio, with key details below, we can't wait to see your work!

BISCUIT TIN GUIDELINES:

This open call is for artists moving image work, (or work in any video format) up to 20 minutes, which has not previously been screened in a physical space. Submissions are open to works which have only been shown online previously. Applicants can be based anywhere! Artists will be paid a screening fee of £80.

There are no parameters on the date when the submitted work was completed and we encourage submissions of past work as well as new.

The screenings will be held at EMBASSY Gallery in Edinburgh on Friday 6th, Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th of December. The works will also be shown online over the film festival's dates. All works will be Captioned by EMBASSY, before their public presentation.

To apply, please complete the questions listed on the Google form linked on our website, link in bio. Applications are also welcome in alternative formats. To apply via video or audio clip, files can be uploaded via the form or emailed to [email protected].

The deadline to apply is 15/11/24, midnight.

72 HOURS LEFT TO APPLY 🏃‍♂️ 🏃

⚡️deadline MIDNIGHT SATURDAY 31/08⚡️

Frustrated by your time at art school? Never went to art school? Literally just looking to hang out w ppl, talk about art and learn some things???

EMERGING STRATEGIES is a programmed series of artist workshops, talks and participatory sessions to explore professional practice. We will cover everything from art activism, creative criticism, collective working, curation, getting projects off the ground, hands on skills and freelancer basics. We will also, in most likelihood, go to the pub.

Inspired by the collectivestudionbp at newbridgeproject, schoolofthedamned, EMBASSY’s previous GradJob/Insession programme and the dire state of higher education in the arts we have put together this nine month programme to bring together early-career practitioners and creative graduates in Scotland interested in collective learning!

Not based in Edinburgh? There will be a travel bursary available for those travelling on public transport to attend each event, both within and outwith Edinburgh. 🚌 🚃 🚂

We are BUZZING to announce some incredible people who will be facilitating some of the workshops on EMERGING STRATERGIES 🏹🫧

RIAH NAIEF (they/them) is a sound artist and founder of the UK's only gallery space dedicated to sound art - LISTEN GALLERY.
Their mission is to bring sound artists into recognition as notable contributors to the visual arts sector. For four years, they have strived to create opportunities for fellow sound artists to share theory and practice of sound art as a conduit to listening. Through their own sound-making practice they collage found sounds with audio archives and synthesised frequencies to create sonic experiences that explore the intersection between art and spirituality.

Listen Gallery is a POC-artist-led grassroots organisation specialising in sound art and listening practices. Hosting a wide-range of opportunities for people to come listen together through exhibitions, workshops, performances, talks and screenings - the space acts as a centre to inspire and explore how sound art and listening activities can connect cultures, improve collective wellbeing, rewrite histories and imagine alternative futures. Listen Gallery’s motto is ‘love is serving the ears now‘, focusing on listening as a model of care for local and international communities of Scotland.

HUSSEIN MITHA is a creative practitioner living in Glasgow. Most often in collaboration with other artists and practitioners, they work across contexts including in socially engaged, community and youth arts, visual art projects, and writing. They are the editor of Paradise Now! A climate justice handbook for young people. Their collection Vegetal Soul was published by Rosie’s Disobedient Press in 2023.

ZARINA MUHAMMAD is an art critic from and based in London. Along with her collaborator (Gabrielle de la Puente) she runs the White P**e, where they publish reviews and essays about art, video games and culture at large. You can find them at thewhitepube.com or on instagram at Their debut novel, Poor Artists, will be out Oct 3rd.

DI-why 🛠️😌💪

what do we even do all day ????
Recently we’ve been working on our space, organising our equipment and building a permanent home for our archive!

Our archive boxes are now accessible to members in our co-working space (available for community takeovers) and we have a nice slick projector set up too 😎 😎 😎

We’re still tidying and testing wires at the moment but we have some more updates coming soon! In the meantime, have a little peek at our website for our open calls ❤️‍🔥
