What can one say, the end of an era. The museum was saddened to hear of the passing of Museum stalwart and good friend , Geoff Wildey . There was nothing he couldn't do - actor , director and teller of the most wonderful tales of his many showbiz friends from stage and screen. We will never see his like again and will miss him so much. R.I.P. Geoffrey after a marvelous life well lived to the full. x

🌒 **The solar eclipse over Dawlish**

I took this from The Strand in Dawlish this evening, looking towards the Strand Centre as the Moon passed across the Sun.

This was a surprisingly difficult photograph to capture. The eclipse itself was incredibly bright compared with the surrounding town, so getting detail in both at the same time was a real challenge.

In the end, this image was created from a seven-shot HDR sequence using an ND filter, allowing me to hold some detail in the crescent Sun while still showing the unmistakable Dawlish skyline beneath it.

Quite a sight, and certainly not an everyday view from The Strand!

This was taken about an hour before sunrise, when Dawlish was still glowing in that lovely early morning blue light 🌅

The sea looks so smooth because this is a long exposure photo.

Instead of taking the picture in a tiny fraction of a second, the camera keeps the shutter open for longer. Anything still, like the buildings and sea wall, stays sharp. Anything moving, like the water and clouds, softens and smooths out.

That’s why the sea almost looks like glass, and the lights from the seafront stretch into the water as soft reflections.

It’s one of the reasons I love being out before sunrise. You get colours, calmness and little details that most people miss while they’re still tucked up in bed.

Mind you, some mornings I do wonder why I’m not still tucked up in bed too.
