Congleton Museum

Congleton Museum is an interactive experience for the whole family. Figures from the past tell their stories, and interactive computers fill in the background.

An ancient log boat, cannonballs from the civil war and the town stocks – just some of the things you can see at Congleton Museum. The museum houses tableaux illustrating life in the town during prehistoric times, in the Civil War, in the heyday of the textile industry and during the Second World War. Relief maps show the changes over the centuries. The Civil War was particularly significant to Co

ngleton – a former mayor of the town, John Bradshaw, was first to sign Charles I’s death warrant. A cannonball from that time, still embedded in a piece of wall from Biddulph Hall, is in the museum. There are frequent temporary exhibitions, often involving the work of local schools. History walks through the town take place on the last Sunday of the month. Visiting the museum is free, but we rely on donations to support the cost of running the museum. Thank you!

Discover Congleton’s greener side this summer!

Explore inspiring places, join fun activities, support local projects and take simple actions for nature. Collect stickers as you go and become a Beartown Green Champion!

Pick up your free Green Passport from Congleton Museum or the Congleton Information Centre. You can also collect your activity stickers there.

Some activities can be completed at any time, while others take place on specific dates or require advance booking. Please check the organiser’s website or event listing for details.

Collect as many stickers as you can over the summer and bring your completed Green Passport to the Green Festival to enter the prize draw.

Calling all explorers!!!

There are 12 teddy bears hiding in the main exhibition at Congleton Museum. Do you think you have what it takes to find them?

Collect a free Teddy Trek activity trail from the front desk and start exploring. There are 12 teddys to find, each with a different name and prop. Find the teddy’s and write down the missing word on each page to complete the Teddy Trek trail. Pencils are available.

Did you know that the Teddy Trek activity trail is also a story book? Don’t forget to keep the booklet safe and read the finished story at home.

For slightly older children, there is a Big Green trail linked to our Our Disappearing Nature exhibition, where children can explore plants, play games and create their own environmental poster.

Each child will decorate a card using bears, flowers, local scenes and a range of craft materials. The finished cards will be placed together inside a large frame, creating a shared artwork designed to look like a window onto Congleton.

Children can show the town as they see it today or imagine what our bear might discover after waking from a century-long sleep.

Naturecraft!

Can you help, did you or anyone you know work for the company? We have an incredibly detailed record and timeline written by Martin Dale for the history of Naturecraft; but what the museum lacks is a record of what it was actually like to work for the company.

Perhaps you worked from home, were a paintress or fettler or worked as part of a team in the mill. You might have a Naturecraft model that could be photographed for records or loaned to the museum for an exhibition.

Our final Nature Walk of the season is this Sunday!

West Heath
Meet at Back Lane Car Park

Join botanist Jack Swan and Town Council Ranger Andy Stubbs as we explore West Heath, one of Congleton Town Council's Biodiversity Sites, including woodland edge, wildflower meadow and newly planted orchard.

We'll compare the plants we find with the 1915 survey and see whether any species recorded over 100 years ago can still be found today.

And visit the Our Disappearing Nature exhibition at Congleton Museum to discover the results of two years of research involving more than 100 people - how our local nature has changed, and why.

Make your own colourful paper flowers and discover why flowers matter to wildlife.

Children will use crepe paper, card and other craft materials to create flowers with stems, petals and colourful details. They will explore the different colours and shapes of flowers and learn why flowers are important for bees, butterflies and other pollinators.
