🏛️🐬 A long-lost Roman sea life mosaic fragment has resurfaced after decades out of sight!

A surviving fragment of a spectacular 2nd-century Roman sea life mosaic, first discovered on Dyer Street in 1783, will soon be on display at Corinium Museum, allowing the public to see it for the first time in 45 years.

Depicting part of a dolphin and fish tail, the fragment is all that remains of a magnificent mosaic floor featuring real and mythical sea creatures that once decorated a Roman townhouse in Corinium.

On loan from Piers Lamplough and his family, this remarkable piece of Cirencester's history will go on public display at Corinium Museum later this year.

The images show the fragment of the mosaic on loan and an illustration of the Sea life Mosaic by antiquarian Samuel Lysons at the time of its discovery in 1783.
