📚⚔️ As part of the Cirencester History Festival, step into the extraordinary stories of the children of the First World War with award-winning author Jamila Gavin.

Meet Lotte, a Belgian refugee, Ernst, a young German soldier, and Khudadad Khan, the first Indian soldier to receive the Victoria Cross, in this gripping event inspired by real-life courage and survival during wartime.

The session includes a reading, Q&A and book signing with Octavia's Bookshop.

✨Friday Finds✨

This pewter chalice dates from the 14th century and was discovered during excavations of the site of Cirencester Abbey and the earlier Saxon church between 1964 and 1966. Chalices were sacred vessels used during the celebration of Holy Communion, holding the w**e that symbolised the blood of Christ.

Its presence in a grave raises an intriguing question: why was it buried with the deceased? One possibility is that the grave belonged to a priest or monk. Similar discoveries have been made elsewhere in Britain, where chalices have been found buried with members of the clergy. Such objects may have served as symbols of the priest's role in celebrating the Eucharist, reflecting the central importance of Communion in medieval religious life.

This rare find offers a poignant reminder of the spiritual beliefs and practices that shaped life and death in medieval Cirencester.

🎠 Cirencester Mop Fair Returns!

Today (5 October) and again on Monday 12 October, Cirencester's historic Mop Fair returns to the town.

Mop Fairs originated in the 14th century following the Black Death, when severe labour shortages meant employers needed new ways to recruit workers. Labourers would attend fairs carrying the tools of their trade to advertise their skills and find employment. Over time, these hiring fairs evolved into the travelling funfairs enjoyed by communities today.

These fascinating photographs from the Corinium Museum collections show Cirencester's Mop Fair in the 20th century, from the the early 1900s to the 1950s. Although much has changed over the years, the Mop Fair remains one of Cirencester's longest-standing traditions.
