Native aquatic plants are now available in our Plant Centre! Ranging from the delicate flowers of the Baldellia Ranunculoides (water plantain) to the structure of the evergreen Equisetum Hyemale (Rough Horsetail) these native aquatic plants are a great way to create a wildlife friendly haven in your garden even in the smallest pond.

Did you hear the news? Brambly Hedge is coming to Hidcote! 🐭

If you’re new to the enchanting world of , here’s a little introduction.

Created by the author and illustrator Jill Barklem, Brambly Hedge tells the stories of a community of mice living among the hedgerows and fields of the countryside. Filled with seasonal celebrations, adventures and heartfelt family moments, the books feature everything from picnics and celebrations to expeditions. 📖✨

Inspired by the Autumn Story, our new family trail follows the young mouse Primrose on an exciting adventure through the gardens. Along the way, discover tiny doors, immersive displays and interactive elements designed to spark imagination, curiosity and play for all ages.

Opening 26 September 2026.

Our garden team is growing and we're on the look out for a new gardener to join our team 🌱

As a Gardener for the National Trust, you’ll be a hands-on member of the garden team, involved in every aspect of gardening at Hidcote. Responsible for day-to-day maintenance, and the highest standards of horticulture, you’ll also play a vital role in improving the experience of visitors to the garden and wider estate

Permanent, full time (37.5 hours per week)
Salary £27,612 per annum

Other benefits include:
• Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary

• Holiday allowance up to 32 days relating to length of service, plus holiday purchase scheme, subject to meeting minimum criteria.

Covering 10.5 acres Hidcote has a diverse collection of plants and environments due to Lawrence Johnston’s plant collecting and inventive gardening vision. Managing a garden of this scale in such challenging conditions as the current drought has made caring for Hidcote difficult for our garden team and volunteers.

However, pulling from experience from previous hot summers and experimenting with new strategies, our team are helping our iconic 'garden rooms' survive these harsh summers.

We wanted to share some of the strategies below:
🌱Planting began as early as possible this year so plants could establish themselves better ahead of the dry months.
💧Some visitors would have already spotted the water 'doughnuts' placed around young trees and shrubs. Each doughnut holds up to 55 litres of water, slowly releasing this over 5 - 7 hours, allowing the ground and roots to take up the water rather than letting it run off the surface.
🌵Incorporated more drought-tolerant plants in the containers which requires less watering, less Oreganum 'Bristol Cross' and Helichrysum petiolare.
🪴Experimented with linings in the terracotta pots to hold the water in such as waterproof paint, compost bags and sheets of mypex.
🚫Closed some of the grassy areas in the Old Garden near the Central Axis as the grass is not resilient enough to cope with foot traffic and the drought.

There's so much more to learn as we see wetter winters and drier summers, but the team are determined to adapt and learn alongside the plants they care for.

An appreciation post for the colours and structure of the Mina lobata, a climber in our plant pergola.

Also known as 'Spanish Flag', this plant can grow up to five metres and it's dark red flowers fade to orange and then a creamy yellow in the summer months.
