Last chance to see Stroud Sensation!

Tomorrow is the final day of the exhibition, with the gallery open from 10am–1pm Saturday 29 August. If you’ve been meaning to visit, or are still considering a piece, now is the time.

Featured here is New Dish (2025) by Polly Morgan.
“New Dish - Like strings of bunting or serried shields my snake-textured augmented sprues, spine-like columns on which acrylic nails are packaged before application, represent beauty both as signal and armour. Through camouflage, mimicry and subterfuge I explore the politicisation of bodily adornments, drawing parallels between military, cultural and primal warfare.”

Stroud Sensation
Last Chance to See!

Only a few days remain to see Stroud Sensation, our current exhibition bringing together the work of 12 Stroud-based artists.

Featured here is the Ophrys Ring, a striking silver ring by James Merry; inspired by the bee orchid, a flower whose curious form and scent mimic its insect pollinators.

“The bee orchid is a flower that has captivated my imagination for years given its curious combination of botany and biology.” — James Merry

Exploring ideas of metamorphosis, Ophrys transforms the human hand into something part flower, part otherworldly insect. The ring was first exhibited at the V&A as part of their Diva exhibition and was worn by Björk on the cover of her Fossora album.

Come and see this fascinating work, alongside the rest of Stroud Sensation, before the exhibition closes!

Stroud Sensation

Dummy Mummy by Abigail Fallis explores the enduring image of Britannia and questions what this symbol might represent in contemporary Britain. Both playful and thought-provoking, the work was originally created in 2010 for Women Make Sculpture, curated by Polly Bielecka at Pangolin London.

Stroud Sensation
Open till Saturday 29th August

In this endless summer heat, Caleta by Colin Reid brings a cool, luminous presence to the gallery. Inspired by volcanic rock on La Gomera, the sculpture transforms rugged natural texture into flawless optical glass, with a turquoise copper patina that seems to hold the light within.

Part of Stroud Sensation, our current exhibition.

Open till Saturday 29th August

“The shelves function as miniature stages on which the objects perform. There is a shift in scale between the objects and their positioning, suggestive of landscapes and giant monoliths or alters and talisman. They are paired up like body parts in a game or trophies elevated to prize position, where the tension between the duos is the choreography of their pas de deux.” - Alice Sheppard Fidler

Early Morning Wren brings together textures cast from the rocks of Tout Quarry with the visual trace of birdsong recorded there at dawn. A wren perched on the microphone and sang, its song transformed into a spectrogram and intricately etched within the cast optical glass.

Created in collaboration with sound artist Rob Godman, the work reflects the enduring presence of the ancient quarry alongside the fleeting, ephemeral moments of life and sound that continue to inhabit it.

The gallery has now reopened after our annual summer shutdown. Come and experience Early Morning Wren through both sight and sound.

Rachel Howard
Not the last (RSM) 2–6

For this series Rachel Howard transforms everyday plastic flowers, the kind left at graves or roadside memorials, through a process of repetition, gravity and chance. Repeatedly coated in acrylic medium, the flowers are suspended upside down to drip and dry before being cast in bronze, preserving the softened forms in metal.

“Formed from a blend of artifice and chance... creating sculptures that look like they might be bouquets discovered in Pompeii.” — Craig Burnett, St Veronica Reads the News (2018)

Howard’s practice explores the tensions between control and chaos, permanence and fragility, beauty and destruction. In Not the last (RSM) 2-6 these often temporary, familiar objects become contemplative sculptures that suspend time, inviting reflection on memory, loss and transformation.

On view in the gallery.
