It's time to take another l👀k at Canterbury through the eyes of one of our artists here at Lilford Gallery and Framing!!!
Today we see Canterbury through the skilled eyes of Anthony R Thomas!
Born in Ramsgate, Anthony R Thomas' career has spanned some 50 years! He initially trained at Maidstone College of Art in the 60s, where he was lucky to have benefited from contact with top British artists such as David Hockney, and to have worked in the Woburn Studio of professional artist Derrick Greaves.
Graduating in 1967 with a first-class honours degree in Fine Art and Printmaking, Anthony embarked on long career teaching art - assisting students at A-level, diploma, and pre-degree course level in developing their careers, whilst constantly developing his own practice.
Since leaving his senior lecturer role in further education, Anthony has dedicated himself to painting. Inspired by the changing effects of light on a landscape, Anthony produces beautiful scenes of the local area like this one of 'Cathedral Tourists' in Mercery Lane, Canterbury.
This tiny lane leading to the Buttermarket and the Cathedral's Christ Church Gate is one of the most photographed streets in England. A favourite location of Anthony's, we love how this painting captures the deep shadows cast by the beautiful timber framed buildings lining this narrow lane, with the low winter sun lighting up the Cathedral's newly restored gate in the background! We hope you love it too!
Find this and other paintings of Canterbury and the surrounding area by Anthony R Thomas at Lilford Gallery and Framing this spring!! Or visit our website...

**JUST ARRIVED!!! 👀**
Lilford Gallery and Framing has a beautiful new collection of Elizabeth Akehurst's works for you to enjoy, many of which featured in her recent solo show with us: 'More than Memory'.
“The picture must come out of the artist's inside, awareness of forms and figures. We can call it memory, but it is more than memory. It is the image as it lives in the consciousness, alive like a vision, but unknown" - D.H Lawrence.
Inspired by D. H Lawrence's view of painting - one of delicate awareness of the surrounding world - Elizabeth's art draws on objects, moments, or experiences often taken for granted, such as a simple garden pot in the spring sunshine, or sitting at the edge of a pool, dipping a toe into the warm water...
Her paintings arise slowly out of a long period of work. After producing a number of rapid, preliminary studies in pen, ink, or watercolour, Elizabeth then explores colour, form and composition in a series of larger studies, where the subject or moment starts to become “known”. She then begins working in oil. Paint is applied using a range of brushes, rollers, or a palette knife. Paintings are worked over many times until something of that original object or experience has been captured....
We particularly love the energy of 'Shirts Off' here at Lilford Gallery and Framing, which captures the joy of stripping off at the beach just before diving into the sea, and the lone figure in quiet contemplation in 'Sitting at the Water's Edge' ....
Which is your favourite? Come and find out by visiting Lilford Gallery and Framing at 76 Castle Street, Canterbury, this spring! We promise you'll fall in love ❤️ with Elizabeth's work just like we have!...
Spring is nearly here! And with so many reasons to visit Canterbury this season (including Lilford Gallery and Framing! 😉), we're going to explore our beautiful city with you through the eyes of some of our artists!
Today, we l👀k through the incredible eyes of Jonathan Stewardson! Born in London in 1963, Jonathan began painting and drawing from an early age. Working predominantly in oil, his style has been described as 'Romantic Realism', and we think this description sums up Jonathan's paintings perfectly. He is able to capture a scene in almost photographic detail, but through his use of light makes it extraordinary! Focusing on the quieter, emptier corners of the city, his works are introspective oases which the viewer can lose themselves in for hours...
Find this and other works of our beautiful city by Jonathan here at Lilford Gallery and Framing, 76 Castle Street, Canterbury, this spring!
