We have some exciting news! Our second interview in a series of artist interviews is now up on our YouTube channel! Last month we caught up with French visual artist Thirsty Bstrd during his solo show at the gallery 'Concrete Dreams'. During the show the artist did a live painting at the gallery and a sit-down interview with us in which he goes into detail on his influences and process.

Thirsty Bstrd is a French visual artist from Paris, using spray paint, stencils, stickers and videos. His work mainly consists in making satirical comments about society, politics and consumerism through pop-culture references and a quirky and subversive sense of humour.

As an independent gallery, we work directly with our artists and this gives us the privilege to share their backgrounds, influences, and approaches to art with you! Remember to subscribe to our channel to follow along as we share more artist interviews, studio tours, behind-the-scenes of our gallery curation and so much more! Over the years Lilford Gallery has built up its eclectic collection of works by artists working across a wide-variety of mediums, we have works by local artists, internationally renowned artists, and sculptors. Since opening in 2000, we have held works from Banksy, Tracy Emin, Billy Childish, JMW Turner, Salvador Dali, Henri Matisse, and David Hockney.

Do you want a chance to win a fantastic picnic basket filled with goodies? Here's what you need to do:

Step 1: Join in on the fun at tomorrow's Gin Fling

Our show with Thirsty Bstrd starts this evening at 6PM!

Thirsty Bstrd is a French visual artist from Paris. To create his work, he uses spray paint, stencils, stickers and videos. Thirsty Bstrd's work mainly consists in making satirical comments about society, politics and consumerism through pop-culture references and subversive sense of humour.

From 2011 to 2015 Thirsty Bstrd was the artistic director of his own creative agency based in Paris. As a part of his work, he worked as a curator and organiser of numerous urban art exhibitions in Paris and Los Angeles, showing his own art at every opportunity.

Thirsty Bstrd has attracted attention in several art auctions and he has been featured in numerous group shows and events. His stencils can be seen by a worldwide audience in the street so we are very excited to bring his work to Canterbury.

Hello everyone! Here is a little teaser trailer for what we are planning to do on our YouTube channel. Our first bit of exclusive content is coming next week! At Lilford Gallery we are all about stories - from artists’ stories to our own. As an independent gallery we work directly and closely with our artists. This gives us the privilege to share their background, approach to art, and their inspirations. We also have a focus on art history - we have some of the first pop artists showing at our gallery and we are currently working on a Surrealist show to honour the movement’s centennial. As a family-run, independent gallery, that was established twenty-four years ago, we have had countless shows, events, workshops, and we want to share all of this with you. On our YouTube channel you will find exclusive interviews with our artists, tours of their studios, and behind the scenes of how we curate their exhibitions in the gallery.

We love a dramatic announcement! Hello everyone, we simply couldn’t wait to share with you - we are reviving our youtube channel 🎬 What can you expect from this? We aim to show you behind the scenes, artist interviews, gallery tours, and fun content produced by us for you to enjoy. What’s more is that we might already have a special interview in the works! We have some exciting news to share with you - our next show is just around the corner! ‘Adam De Ville: Paintings’ is a solo show with works by local artist Adam De Ville and it will open on the 5TH OF APRIL AT 6PM. Adam is a self taught artist working in a variety of mediums. His diverse work includes landscape, abstract, portrait, figurative, cityscape, and collaboration. Adam’s approach to painting can be very intuitive - he prefers to start with a strong idea but he then lets the moment take over him. While some of the work is deliberate, he aims to keep an element of risk and chance to his approach.

Lilford Gallery was one of the first places to exhibit Adam’s work, since then he has exhibited nationally and internationally.

“I love finding a face for the first time, or a place caught in the moment. Much of the work carries a duality, an element of light and shade. I think it’s important to have fun and hopefully the work reflects that” - Adam De Ville

Last chance to buy tickets for our workshop with James Bland tomorrow! Read on to learn more about the workshop and how to purchase your ticket!

Lilford Gallery has worked with James for years and we are happy to announce we will be hosting a special art workshop led by James on Saturday, the 18th of November. James’ paintings are very much underpinned by traditional values of draughtsmanship and colour theory. During the workshop, he will be sharing his techniques and insights into painting. You are invited to choose from two pieces in Lilford Gallery to portray under James' guidance. The workshop will be two and a half hours, which includes a break in between. This is a rare chance to learn about painting from a professional with years of practice and teaching under his belt. We are keeping the numbers small on the workshop, this way it will be far more intimate and James will make sure each person in attendance gets his attention. Materials and easels will be provided.

Before the workshop James will be doing a free painting demonstration from 12pm until 1pm.

**PAINTING WORKSHOP**

We hope you all know about our Solo Exhibition with James Bland launching on Friday (see our last post), but we also have a very exciting chance for you to learn from the artist himself, in a unique painting workshop. Read on to find out more...

Here at Lilford Gallery we have worked with James for many years now, and are happy to announce we will be hosting a special art workshop, led by James, on Saturday 18th of November.

James’ paintings are very much underpinned by traditional values of draughtsmanship and colour theory. During the workshop, he will be sharing his techniques and insights into painting. You will choose one of two sculptural pieces to portray (provided by us) and create your own masterpiece under the expert guidance and support of James. The workshop will be two and a half hours, with a short break included. This is a rare chance to learn about painting from a professional with years of practice and teaching under his belt!

We are keeping the numbers small for the workshop, allowing a more intimate setting for James to ensure each person in attendance gets his attention. Be sure to book your place before spaces get taken up!

*All materials and easels will be provided, so you just need to bring yourself along*

Before the workshop starts James will be doing a free painting demonstration, which everyone is welcome to join us for, from 12 until 1pm.

We have some amazing news! Our new show with works by James Bland opens next Friday!!! Read on to learn more about James, and the workshop that James will be hosting for you here at the gallery!

James Bland is a figurative artist who lives and works in Kent. As an artist, James enjoys the surrender of control that oil painting offers. James Bland’s work incorporates diverse approaches to style and subject but he usually begins in drawing and painting from life. His aim is to find an image that resonates through simplicity of colour and form. He likes the idea of painting as a way of telling stories and he finds inspiration in literature as well as visual art.

James Bland will be exhibiting his works at Lilford Gallery from the 10th of November, until the 28th of November. If you are local to Canterbury, you might have seen James painting around town in preparation for this show, we now invite you to see his completed paintings, both old and new, all of which showcase James’ distinctive view of life around him and the many elements that shape his work.

NEW WORKS ALERT! Jason deCaires Taylor is a sculptor, environmentalist, and professional underwater photographer. His permanent site-specific sculptural works are predominately exhibited in submerged and tidal marine environments. Over the past 17 years, Taylor has been one of the first to consider the underwater realm as a public art space. The works are constructed using pH neutral, environmentally sensitive materials to instigate natural growth and the subsequent changes intend to explore the aesthetics of decay, rebirth and metamorphosis. His pioneering public art projects are examples of successful marine conservation and appreciation of the breathtaking beauty of the underwater world.

Lilford Gallery is proud to be exhibiting his work, which is absolutely spectacular in person, so seeing it is a must!

As part of this year's Canterbury Festival we are delighted to welcome artist Carne Griffiths back to Lilford Gallery for this highly anticipated solo exhibition 'Libertas'.

 In this show we present a collection of new works on canvas and paper by Griffiths - exploring notions of freedom, flight and reflections on nature. The paintings presented in this collection reflect the artist's desire to break away from his usual practice of ink and teas on paper to explore different mediums, as well as working on a larger scale.

 Griffiths feels this change to canvas and scale brings about challenges but also imparts freedom to the gestural marks and spontaneity within each piece. "Each piece in the series aims to instil a sense of calm abandonment, a place to lose yourself. Within the marks you will find common elements that I use within my painting, small sprigs of delicate flowers, gestural marks and geometrical shapes, which may sometimes suggest the silhouette of a skyline or tall monument. Geometry within the work, particularly ellipses, to me represent the expanse of the universe, and are a comfort while painting and creating." - Carne Griffiths.

 There will also be an interactive VR installation created by Carne for you to experience as part of the show!

 The exhibition will launch on Friday 13th October at 6pm – there will be a limited edition print giveaway for the first 20 attendees at the launch (shown in last slide!)
