Day 20 of is 🏳️‍🌈

French artist Rosa Bonheur was widely considered to be the most famous female painter of the 19th Century.

Women were often only reluctantly educated as artists. By becoming successful, she helped open doors to women artists that followed her.

The icon and was also outspoken about her personal life, wore men’s clothing and refused to conform during a time where gender expression was policed.

🖼️ ‘The Forge’ by James Sharples, is one of the first paintings to depict the reality of the industrial revolution in the 19th Century, which transformed quaint market towns like Blackburn into sprawling industrial centres.

Day 16: Technology

From weaving to paper-making, mining to valve production, BwD has always been a centre of industrial innovation and creativity. 💡

By 1900, companies such as Shaws Glazed Brick Co Ltd were reworking collieries to extract fire clay to produce brick, tiles, chimney pots and sanitary ware.

In order to gauge the quality of clays used, Shaws produced test pieces using the same technique. These took the form of ornaments, bookends and vases, like the example featured here.

Here's a scan of a vase made by Shaws of Darwen (now Darwen Terracotta), Lancashire. Mid 1900s. Slip cast, glazed ceramic. Made using Reality Capture, 8K Cross Polarised. By Sairo Uk. 🏺

Attention people aged 18-30 living/studying in Blackburn with Darwen and nearby towns! 📣

In collaboration with the National Festival of Making, we would like to invite you to a series of FREE trips to explore some of the most exciting exhibitions and events happening in the North of England.

Saturday 18th November - Factory International
Sunday 26th November - FACT Liverpool & Walker Art Gallery
Saturday 2nd December - Yorkshire Sculpture Park

These trips are free of charge and available to anyone who lives/studies or has a connection to Blackburn with Darwen and neighbouring towns.

Travel and any associated entries are included 🚌

We are looking to support the development of a new collective group for people aged 18-30 in early 2024. We want to hear your ideas and interests and how we can best support young people in the area. The first part of this work is getting to know people in the area and finding out what is wanted and needed.

You can join these trips with no commitment to working with the group in 2024, attend one or come to all - the choice is yours!

Whether you're an artist, student, musician, writer, baker, gamer, designer, footballer, maker, or anything else in between, this is an excellent chance to discover new work, meet like-minded people, and learn about upcoming opportunities in your area.

Tune in to meet Alys, our Outreach and Engagement Officer! 🙌

Tune into the 'Education Matters’ radio show with presenters Dr Sajyda Talib & Eleanor Dove on Tuesday 7th November 2023 from 3pm till 5pm LIVE on Pendle Community Radio - Awaz 103.1FM

During this weeks edition of the radio show, presenters Dr Sayjda Talib and Eleanor Dove will be learning all about local museums, the education routes into museum work and sharing information about the exciting ‘Festival of Making’ at Blackburn Museum and the free opportunities available:

https://festivalofmaking.co.uk/news/days-out-in-the-north-of-england-with-usfor-free/

We will be hearing from Alys who has been working in museums and galleries since 2017 – both in volunteer roles or contracted positions. Alys can mostly be found having a chat with whoever might listen, and as an Outreach and Engagement Officer this suits her quite well. Most of her work in museums has centred around community outreach projects and displays which strive to include diverse voices in museum narratives.

Alys has recently moved to Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery where she is working to develop and deliver an engagement programme and collaborate with communities and partners to create inclusive narratives of the collections and the borough. In her spare time she is an assistant youth support worker and avid cake enjoyer.

Tune into the show and get involved via phone on 01282 723455 or via whatsapp on 07522723455.
