Our new exhibition Rhyme & Reason includes this amazing bronze mask by Louis Richard Garbe. It’s of Lachesis one of the three fates of Greek mythology. Lachesis’ role was to measure and cut the thread of human life that had been spun by her sister Clotho. She determined how long someone lived whilst her other sister Atropos decided how they would die.

One of the works in our new exhibition Rhyme and Reason is a printer’s proof sheet of illustrations by Edward Bawden for the 1965 The Folio Society edition of ‘Gulliver’s Travels’. Gulliver had been Bawden’s first commission for the society in 1948 when he was asked to provide illustrations for a smaller edition of Jonathan Swifts’ book which, due to paper rationing, only included the first two parts. By 1965 a full edition of the book was published with eight new illustrations by Bawden.
You can see this and lots of other Bawden’s for free here at The Higgins Bedford, The home of The Edward Bawden Archive.
