Aldershot Military Museum We're a community museum telling stories from the towns of Aldershot and Farnborough and how the British Army garrison has shaped this area.

Want to volunteer with us?https://tinyurl.com/3spar5wx Two surviving 1890s brick-built barrack blocks, a 1930s wooden barrack block from Queen Elizabeth Barracks, Church Crookham and Field Marshal Montgomery's 'barn' that house the museums military and local history collections. There is a large collection of military vehicles displayed either in the Montgomery Gallery or in the grounds of the museum.

Today our volunteer team made solid progress on the Scimitar, some more ancillaries removed to our 'workshop' for painting.

Remember - "Assembly is the reversal of disassembly" for those that remember a certain brand of car manual.

And some breaking news - we're hoping that our friends Arty and Marty from the Garrison will be in to rearrange some of the vehicles.

Pig update - we've refitted rear skirt and step, looking good in the sunny weather so I couldn't resist a walk around. All done except for the inside of door & hatches which we plan to do in the original Deep Bronze Green which should be a nice contrast.

Today our volunteers gave the Scimitar a quick fashion show – the skirt was lifted and inspected, according to the team, it looks rather dashing. Passers‑by on Queens Avenue stopped to admire, proving that even a static vehicle can turn heads. Mirrors, light lenses and the turret‑side fire extinguisher have been stowed in the barn, clearing the way for the next round of work on Sunday.

Flotation screens were fitted to early Scimitars which when raised allowed the vehicle to float with propulsion provided by the tracks. Have a look when you're next visiting.

Today's push on the Humber 1‑ton “Pig” saw the wooden window stop blocks fitted to the driver and passenger doors. The rear step and drop down hinged plate have been removed for painting. That's a heavy piece of steel - part of the Pig up-armouring that was added to help protect the legs and ankles when dismounting or standing at the rear. This allows us access to paint underneath the rear doors. Slowly but surely our Pig is getting it's finishing touches.

Hose Tops - standard army issue footless stockings

During a recent inventory check in our collection stores, our team uncovered these plain khaki British Army hose tops. While they might look simple at first glance, these heavy woollen, footless socks carry a fascinating history of military utility.Far from being purely ceremonial dress, plain khaki hose tops were standard-issue items for generations of soldiers serving across the British Empire. They were particularly vital for troops wearing Khaki Drill (KD) shorts in tropical theatres and desert campaigns, such as North Africa during the Second World War. Worn pulled up over the calf with turnover tops, they protected soldiers' legs from the scorching sun, rough sand, and biting insects, all while conserving valuable wool by leaving out the foot section. Finding pieces like this tucked away reminds us of the practical realities of daily life for the ordinary soldier.
