Olga de Amaral’s ‘Umbra B’ which Amar Gallery sold in 2016 - over a decade ago I spotted Amaral’s work and was moved by the power of it.
Olga de Amaral is a pioneering 94 year old (b 1932) Colombian artist who radically transformed traditional weaving into a monumental form of contemporary abstract sculpture.
Her powerful works blend ancestral Andean textile practices with modernist abstraction, shifting fiber art off the wall and directly into three-dimensional space. Utilizing organic elements like linen, wool, and horsehair alongside structural materials like gesso and acrylic, she often coats her woven surfaces in radiant gold and silver leaf. This creates a hypnotic, meditative quality that beautifully evokes Colombian landscapes, architectural structures, and the sacred spiritual history of pre-Columbian gold.
Amaral’s works are in the permanent collection of The Met, MoMa, Tate & other museums worldwide
