The record-breaking $53M sale in New York this week of Basquiat’s Museum Security — a powerful 1983 masterpiece from a French collection — feels like the perfect moment to pay tribute not only to Basquiat himself, a contemporary whose genius was immediately evident to me back then, but also to his legendary dealer Bruno Bischofberger.

A colleague, an elder, and a true inspiration to me, Bruno believed in, supported, and championed the young prodigy from the very beginning. Basquiat was only 23 when he painted this monumental work.

Jean-Michel left us tragically just five years later. And Bruno passed away only days ago.

Surely, they’re reunited somewhere up there tonight.
