In Focus: Ilana Savdie’s ‘A Wild Unclean’ (2026) on view at Frieze London

A technicolour riot of forms flows through a canyon of dark beeswax in Ilana Savdie’s painting ‘A Wild Unclean’ (2026), with the momentum of a stampede.

The artist draws on images of piled bodies, in which individual identities are subsumed. In the foreground, a mantis preens calmly, its composure set against the surrounding destruction.

In bringing these motifs together, Ilana creates a tension between spectacle and apathy, exposing how repeated exposure to images of suffering can make violence seem disturbingly ordinary.

The forms of construction – as observed in the urban surroundings of his childhood home of Shinagawa, Tokyo – have become the hallmarks of his paintings, forming a thematic and visual link throughout the work, and a dialogue between construction and ruin, the manmade and the natural.⁠

White Cube, Art Basel Paris and the Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine present three large-scale bronze sculptures by Tracey Emin at Parvis des Droits de l’Homme.⁠
⁠
Installed together, ‘I lay here for you’ (2018), ‘I Followed You to the End’ (2024), and ‘I Will Not Be Alone’ (2025) explore the transformation of a female body as the figure moves from kneeling to seated, tracing a journey from surrender to resilience.⁠

‘I never strive for a perfect exhibition. I work with the mistakes that I’ve done before and take those experiences with me.’ – Danh Vo

In this film, Danh reflects on the relationships between diverse materials, narratives, and histories, bringing objects together in new and evolving contexts.

Danh is a recipient of this year’s Isamu Noguchi Award, honouring his sustained artistic dialogue with Noguchi’s work for nearly a decade.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has also announced that the artist will create the 2027 Genesis Facade Commission, presenting new works on the Museum’s Fifth Avenue façade.

In Focus: Gabriel Orozco’s ‘Visible Labour’ (2015) at White Cube Bermondsey

Constructed from materials originally used in Japanese temple architecture, Gabriel’s ‘Visible Labour’ was first shown in Tokyo in 2015 shortly after he moved to the city.

Toy Ferraris, miniature Buddha figures and other found objects are interspersed among the beams, while a game of Go occupies the centre of the installation, drawing upon the artist's longstanding interest in systems of play, strategy and spatial organisation.

Curator Briony Fer has described the work as composing ‘the remnants of a kind of archaeology’ in a ‘constructive, structural sense’, in keeping with the rules of Japanese architecture from which it borrows.

Now Open: Ilana Savdie at Frieze London ✨

White Cube at Frieze London (Booth D21) opens today, debuting new paintings and works on paper by Ilana Savdie.

Ilana’s vivid canvases are installed behind an open lattice hung with works by artists including Hans Bellmer, Louise Bourgeois, Salvador Dalí and Leonor Fini, among others, forming a physical and metaphorical filter through which to view her work.

Highlights include:

✨ Ilana’s ‘Illness of bronze’ (2026), in which a snake-like form appears caught between concealment and exposure. Drawing upon the Monocuco costume from the carnaval traditions of Colombia, the work considers the darker implications of anonymity and disguise.

✨ ‘A Stanchless Avarice That, Were I King’ (2026), referencing Shakespeare’s Macbeth to consider the relationship between power, the body and uncontrolled desire.

✨ Ilana’s new work on paper ‘Autophagia’ (2026)

Also featured: John Banting’s ‘Procession by Night’ and Hans Bellmer’s ‘Sans titre’.

Born on this day: Al Held (1928–2005)⁠
⁠
Over a career of five decades, American artist Al Held committed to an exploration of the potential for abstraction to reach beyond the realm of the viewer’s primary senses.⁠
⁠
Following his decade-long ‘Black and White’ series (1967–78), in which the artist abandoned colour, his ‘Return to Colour’ series (1978–85) incorporated pastel, neon and rich hues to distinguish planes and perspectives in increasingly complex and expansive compositions.⁠
⁠
Held reflected on this period in 2004, saying, ‘I decided it was time to introduce colour to be able to fracture the spaces and the forms, but hold the images with colour’.⁠
