« Cezanne et nous » : l'exposition-événement arrive le 23 septembre au Grand Palais ! ⛰️

Cette exposition offre un dialogue riche entre l’œuvre de Paul Cezanne (1839-1906), l’un des piliers de l’art moderne occidental, et celles des artistes qui, de la fin du 19e siècle à nos jours, ont constamment trouvé dans son œuvre la liberté de réinventer la peinture.

Elle présente près de 180 œuvres, dont 70 de Cezanne, aux côtés d’artistes modernes et contemporains comme Etel Adnan, Peter Doig, Henri Matisse ou Joan Mitchell.

“Cezanne et nous”: the exhibition arrives at the Grand Palais on September 23! ⛰️

This exhibition offers a rich dialogue between the work of Paul Cezanne (1839–1906), one of the pillars of modern art, and that of artists who, from the late 19th century to the present day, have continually found in his work the freedom to reinvent painting.

It features nearly 180 works, including 70 by Cezanne, alongside works by modern and contemporary artists such as Etel Adnan, Peter Doig, Henri Matisse and Joan Mitchell.

Un équilibre... déséquilibré 🫨

Avec cette œuvre, Theo Van Doesburg, fondateur du mouvement « De Stijl », considère qu'il atteint son but : « une composition entièrement plate dans laquelle le point central est en dehors de la peinture ».

Asymétrique, la composition caractérisée par l'imbrication de bandes de couleurs sur un fond gris neutre donne une impression d'équilibre et d'unité visuelle. Cependant, la présence, dans le coin gauche, d'un grand carré blanc laissé inachevé perturbe ironiquement le caractère systématique de cette trame picturale.

An unbalanced... balance 🫨

With this work, Theo Van Doesburg, founder of the "De Stijl" movement, considered that he had achieved his goal: "a completely flat composition in which the central point is outside the painting".

This asymmetrical composition characterised by the interlocking colour stripes on a neutral grey background gives an impression of balance and a visual unity. However, the presence in the left corner, of a large white square left unfinished ironically disturbs the repetitive character of this pictorial framework.

« Je suis arrivé à faire s'interpénétrer [les couleurs] grâce à des formes en croix, qui fonctionnent ici mieux que des carrés, les 6 couleurs se combinent bien entre elles avec ce système. » – François Morellet 🌈

Après avoir découvert l'œuvre du Zurichois Max Bill en 1950, François Morellet se convertit à l'abstraction géométrique.

Dans cette peinture au format rigoureusement carré, une simple croix se répète à l'infini associée à des couleurs primaires et secondaires. Cette répétition systématique brouille la distinction entre fond et forme sur un mode ludique.

François Morellet converted ta Geometric abstraction after discovering the work of Zurich artist Max Bill in 1950.

ln this rigorously square painting, a simple cross is repeated indefinitely in combination with the primary colours and secondary colours. This systematic repetition blurs the distinction between shape and ground in a fun way.

Figure majeure de l'art moderne, Emmanuel Radnitsky, plus connu sous le nom de Man Ray, était peintre, photographe et réalisateur de films. Il est notamment l'un des membres incontournables du dadaïsme à New York, puis du mouvement surréalisme à Paris. 📸

C'est avec une grande émotion que nous apprenons la disparition de Yayoi Kusama.

Artiste visionnaire, Yayoi Kusama a marqué l’histoire de l’art contemporain par son univers unique, fait d’obsessions, de motifs infinis et de couleurs vibrantes. Installations, peintures, sculptures mais aussi performances, son œuvre, à la fois radicale, contestatrice et poétique, a captivé des générations à travers le monde.

Le Centre Pompidou a eu l’honneur de présenter ses créations, notamment en 2011 avec la première rétrospective française consacrée à l'artiste japonaise ou plus récemment en 2025 lors de l'exposition « Énormément bizarre ».

Yayoi Kusama laisse en héritage un monde où l’art est une expérience infinie.

A visionary artist, Yayoi Kusama left an indelible mark on contemporary art with her unique universe of obsessions, infinite patterns, and vibrant colors. Through installations, paintings, sculptures, and performances, her radical, defiant, and poetic body of work has captivated generations around the world.

The Centre Pompidou was honored to showcase her creations, including the first French retrospective dedicated to her in 2011 and, more recently, in 2025 with the exhibition "Enormously Bizarre".

Yayoi Kusama leaves behind a legacy where art is an endless experience.

Dorothea Tanning, magicienne du surréalisme ✨

L'artiste américaine Dorothea Tanning s’impose dans le cercle surréaliste new-yorkais des années 1940 aux côtés de Max Ernst, André Breton et Peggy Guggenheim. Ses toiles, peuplées de portes mystérieuses et de créatures oniriques, mêlent désir, angoisse et une précision hallucinatoire.

Dans les années 1960, elle révolutionne la sculpture avec des œuvres en tissu et objets du quotidien, créant des corps déformés et poétiques. Son travail, entre érotisme et inquiétante étrangeté, influence aussi bien le pop art que des artistes comme Louise Bourgeois.
