At the beginning of the exhibition ‘Spinning Rumours Ópalo’ by Antwerp based artist duo Carla Arocha and Stéphane Schraenen, the visitor encounters this two channel video work titled Lumen Internum (2026). While the small TV screen shows a number of dissolving close-up images of opal stones, the large vertical projection projects them with the opposite colour scheme.

— ARTIST TALK AND BOOK PRESENTATION

Images taken during the book presentation ‘Carla Arocha and Stéphane Schraenen: Monograph as Project’ at Es Baluard Museu in Palma. The conversation featured the two artists and was moderated by Antoni Ferrer.

‘Carla Arocha and Stéphane Schraenen: Monograph as Project’ was edited and authored by curator and art historian Barbara Vanderlinden, with book design by Irma Boom.

The book includes essays by Mónica Amor, Philippe Pirotte, Marc Donnadieu, and Barbara Vanderlinden with interviews by Helen Molesworth and Hans Ulrich Obrist.

Expanding the notion of the artist monograph, this richly illustrated study examines both the individual and collaborative practices of Arocha and Schraenen from the 1990s to today.

We thank the museum, specially its director David Barro as well as Pilar Rubí Head of Public Programme, for hosting the presentation.

This event was part of the official programme of Art Palma Brunch organised by Art Palma Contemporani.

‘Spinning Rumours Ópalo’ by Carla Arocha and Stéphane Schraenen at galería Fermay.

‘Spinning Rumours Ópalo’, takes as a starting point the opal stone, a quartz-like mineral characterised by its internal refractive light crystals.The opal acts throughout the exhibition as a sustained motif that allows the artists to delve into notions such as truth, facts and meaning-making process while also continuing their formal investigation on perception, colour and light.

The images refer to the site-specific piece Ópalo (2026) that occupies the main space of the gallery.
