Etage Projects is an art, architecture and design gallery situated in the centre of Copenhagen’s art district.

Etage Projects is a gallery situated in the centre of Copenhagen’s art district. Etage Projects provides a platform for designers, artists and architects to explore ideas through: exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and publications. We are committed to working with interdisciplinary creatives who actively question received models of practice and exhibition. Through this, Etage Project intends to enrich and broaden the definitions of art, architecture and design.

A low table that looks like a section cut out of something larger. Anodised aluminium, every fixing left in view. Soft Baroque’s Stealth Coffee Table sits on Kueng Caputo’s Homage Carpet, rubber granulate bound into waves, with two Mountain Vases by FOS in amber glass, blown until the surface creased.
Beside it, Bahraini-Danish’s Atlas Stool in walnut, a column that has been cut open and leans a little. Above, Freddy Tuppen’s pendant: a loose stack of painted calico boxes that glows rather than shines. On the wall, Tomoya Matsuzaki, pastel on found paper.

Aluminium rods, a sapele frame and calico panels screwed into place. Nothing hidden, nothing extra. Tuppen works with constraints as a starting point rather than a limit, and the result is a lamp that reads like a small piece of architecture: a grid you can see straight through until the light is on, and then a soft glow held between the layers.

Now in the window at Borgergade 15E.

MARIE HOLST Lost and Found, 2024 Acquired by Statens Kunstfond

Damask is the weave that belonged to the tablecloth and the good linen. The pattern lives in the binding itself, never printed, never painted on. Marie Holst runs reflective thread through it.
Stand still and the cloth is one thing. Move, or wait for the light to move, and the pattern surfaces somewhere else entirely. Eyes and silvered petals folded into one another, equal parts flower and something looking back at you.
Wool, nylon and reflective yarn. 105 x 360 cm.

The work was made for The Mindcraft Project and shown with us in Time is a Mother, spring 2025, a group exhibition that took its name from Ocean Vuong and traced the quiet violence of time, how it erodes, nurtures and shapes bodies, materials and histories. Holst’s work sat on the tender side of that.
It has now been acquired by Statens Kunstfond. Congratulations, Marie🤍

This summer, The Barn opened as host - to an exhibition, and to two research residencies, in a former stable in Maloja, 1,815m up in the Swiss Engadin.

Sabine Marcelis’ “Maloja Fog” closes this weekend: FOG Mirrors in coloured glass and Soap Table in cast resin, sitting in mountain light that never treats them the same way twice. On view by appointment until 14 September.

Alongside the show, The Barn hosted its first research residencies: Christian+Jade and Fos Studio and julielaenkholm , spending time in the Engadin - exploring and walking the valley.

Grateful for the time they gave the place, and excited for what they leave behind.
The Barn continues with two seasons a year - summer and winter, and residencies in between.

The hour

Half past five in August. The sun drops behind the ridge and the long mirror goes from green to almost nothing, then the lake outside does the same thing twenty minutes later. The mountain eclipse is the grand finale.

Some clouds only belong to one place. The Maloja Snake slips through the pass and pours into the valley, the phenomenon Olivier Assayas built Clouds of Sils Maria around, borrowing its name for the film’s central play.

That same valley, those same clouds, that same shifting light, now surrounds Sabine Marcelis in the Engadin.

Robert Damisch photographed the landscape as it holds the work: the lakes, the larches, the peaks leaning in through every window. Inside, colour and light.

Outside, the country that Assayas, and the painters long before him, could not look away from.

Painters have climbed to Maloja for it since the nineteenth century. Segantini settled here to paint the high valley and never left it. That same light now enters The Etage Projects Barn and lands on the new mirror collection by Sabine Marcelis that take the day in slowly, hour by hour, the way a canvas once did.

Kueng Caputo built the conditions. Rooms pigmented like the valley floor, a ceiling the green of the larch forest, nothing that competes and everything that listens.

Joining a conversation that was already three centuries old.

The SOAP table by Sabine Marcelis

Cast in resin, then worked until the surface turns soft and matte, closer to soap than to stone. Up close the edges give nothing away. The colour sits inside the material rather than on top of it, catching the light differently as you move around it.
The series began here in the Engadin in 2018, when the first one was carried into an old house in the mountains. It has travelled a long way since. In Maloja, against the terracotta floor, it looks like it never left.

The fog, twice

A blush of colour hangs inside the rose Foggy Gradient Mirror where a reflection should be, gathering at the centre like weather and clearing toward the edges. Made by Sabine Marcelis for Maloja Fog at The EP Barn, against the pink plaster walls of the barn the mirror almost disappears into the room, until you move, and it moves with you.

Keep swiping for the original. During his residency in Maloja, Robert Damisch photographed the fog the mirror answers to: the Maloja Snake sliding down the valley at dawn, swallowing the lakes below.

Dear friends,

In February 2018 we carried an off white table into a sixteenth century house in the Engadin for an exhibition in the mountains. It was the first SOAP table Sabine Marcelis made - cast resin worked to a soft, matte, almost soapy surface. That single piece grew into a series, and the collaboration has run ever since. Actually since 2013 when the gallery showed her graduation project in Copenhagen.

This summer Sabine comes back to the same mountains. We are opening Maloja Fog at The Barn, our new space in Maloja, and it is her first exhibition there.

The title belongs to the valley. At the head of the Engadin a low cloud sometimes forms at the pass and slips down toward the lakes in one long line. People here call it the Maloja Snake, and it has drawn painters and filmmakers for a century.
Sabine has said her sense of colour comes from the mountains, from the light above the clouds where sun and cloud mix. In Maloja that is simply the weather outside.

The show brings together new foggy gradient mirrors, coloured glass that fades from clear reflection into a soft haze, and SOAP tables in cast resin, the series that began here in the Engadin. At 1,815 metres the light changes by the hour, and the work answers it in a way no gallery interior can. The painter Giovanni Segantini settled at this exact altitude in 1894 for the same reason, chasing a light he could not find anywhere else.
