A YEAR ON BORNHOLM - JULY - BLUEST OF BLUES 🩵💙

I’ve said it before, I know… but I’ve never seen a sea as blue as the Baltic. Maybe it’s because it’s seen from our little island. Maybe it’s because there’s so often a cloudless summer sky. Whatever the reason, the blue is the bluest of blues.

And these blues found their way into the month of July in my 2027 calendar. On the beach in Balka; the perfect arc of sky over the church in Nyker; the fields of cornflowers in Østermarie; the blue harbour in Vang; and the peeling paintwork of a friendly old boat in Rønne marina.

Bornholm summer at its best, in the bluest of blues.🩵💙

My Limited Edition A4 month-view hanging Calendar is available from my Gallery, selected Bornholm outlets, and to order through my webshop. The stories are available in English, Danish and German.

A YEAR ON BORNHOLM - AUGUST - DEEP GREEN 💚

With summer at its peak in August, it seems that wherever you look on Bornholm, it’s green.

The trees, now in full leaf, colour the landscape and reflect in the island’s lakes and streams. The stone floors of quarry lakes and granite harbours gleam through glassy green water. Even the shadows seem a deeper shade of green.

So choosing “Deep Green” as August’s colour palette for my 2027 Calendar was easy. And, as always, each image is accompanied by one of my little Bornholm stories. 💚💚💚

A YEAR ON BORNHOLM - SEPTEMBER - WARM PINK

I love watching the seasons change - seeing the light and the colours shift and soften.

I captured this in my PhotoArt Series “A YEAR ON BORNHOLM” which is now available as my 2027 Calendar.

Each month has its own colour palette of beautiful Bornholm sights and carefully observed details.

September is “Warm Pink”: the little fishing village of Helligpeder bathed in late-afternoon amber-pink light. And the details are pink too: the traditional pink house in Hasle; a pinky-purple dawn reflected in the rocky shoreline at Sandvig; and two of my Colour Samples: “HERITAGE BRICK”, capturing the crumbling red brick of Hammershus Castle, and my favourite cherub, “NATURAL PINK” - a hidden gem in Aa Church.

As with all my art, words play their part too. Each image comes with its own little story revealing the magic of Bornholm.

The Limited Edition A4 month-view hanging Calendar is available from my Gallery, other Bornholm outlets, and to order through my webshop. The Stories are available in English, Danish and German.

THE MAKING OF MY SUMMER MONTAGE ☀️ - Part 3 of 3

And here it is…

The finished “Summer Montage”.

What began as a page of pencil sketches gradually became a single piece of PhotoArt, celebrating the colours, light and atmosphere of Bornholm in summertime.

I hope you’ve enjoyed following the journey from first ideas to finished artwork.

My aim is to capture the spirit and soul of Bornholm so you can take a little bit of that magic home with you. ✨😊

The Summer Montage is my bestselling PhotoArt in my Allinge Gallery and the Fine Art Print is also available in my 3 other outlets as well as my Webshop.

THE MAKING OF MY SUMMER MONTAGE ☀️ - Part 2 of 3

The colours I was seeing in Bornholm in summer were predominantly yellow, green and blue… Yellow for the sun (it isn’t called the Sunshine Island for nothing!), green for the abundant nature, and blue for the sea - oh, that bluest of blue Baltic.

Then, when I visited the Oluf Høst Museum in Gudhjem, there were those colours again! The famous Bornholm artist, who painted from 1884–1966, was using those same yellows, greens and blues in his summer landscapes. And it gave me an idea: same Bornholm, same colours - only 100 years apart.

So what you see here is my deconstruction of an Oluf Høst painting into its core colour palette, which I then matched to my own colours. Traditional oil paints meet modern photographic images.

Then I weave Oluf Høst’s colours into my own to create my (or should I say “our”) Bornholm Summer Montage. 😊

Next you’ll see the final Part 3 where my Hero Shots + Høst’s Colours are completed with my matching Colour Samples in the final Summer Montage…☀️

THE MAKING OF MY SUMMER MONTAGE☀️ - Part 1 of 3

Every PhotoArt montage starts the same way - with beautiful images of special places. I call these my “Hero Shots”.

From there, I sketch out a layout, supported by my “Colour Swatch” images. I print everything out and move the pieces around like a game of chess until I find the perfect balance of colour and form.

The colour palette itself is really important. It can’t include every colour of the rainbow - that would be way too much. So, for my Bornholm Summer Palette, I took inspiration from the island’s famous colourist Oluf Høst… but more on that in Part 2 🎨

Bornholm Summer Neutrals 🤍🤎

The colours of Bornholm choose themselves. I don’t go out hunting for them. They call out to me… then I capture them with my camera.

And it’s not always the bright colours that shout loudest. Sometimes it’s the neutrals - beautiful in their seductive subtlety.

Like the crystalline pattern of “SUNLIT SHALLOWS” or the intriguing terrain of “COALSCAPE”. But the one that won my heart was “SUN-KISSED SAND”… but you’ll have to read the little story and see the funny video about that to find out more… ☺️🫶🏼
