In 2026, the Museum Lyonel Feininger reinterprets its own history and, on the occasion of its 40th anniversary, opens the exhibition “Human, Master, Modernist | Feininger in Focus.”
The exhibition highlights Lyonel Feininger, once a caricaturist and later a master of the Bauhaus. At the same time, it pays tribute to Dr. Hermann Klumpp, whose lifelong loyalty to his artist friend laid the foundation for the museum’s collection.
On 17 January 1986, the former Lyonel Feininger Gallery was opened – as an expression of a deep commitment to an oeuvre that, like few others, stands for light, clarity, and spirit. Four decades later, the museum not only looks back on a remarkable success story but also reimagines itself: with a revised, expanded, and emotionally enriched presentation of its collection.
The exhibition becomes a dialogical event: between art and history, between human being and myth – between Lyonel Feininger and the man who preserved his legacy, Dr. Hermann Klumpp. It honours the established presentation while expanding it with new perspectives, contexts, and voices.
“Human, Master, Modernist | Feininger in Focus” is more than an exhibition title – it is a statement: about the human behind the genius, about the work as a world, and about the museum as a living space of memory.
