A belated happy birthday to Marc Chagall (1887–1985)!

Few artists have shaped twentieth-century art as profoundly as Chagall. Drawing on memories of his childhood, Jewish tradition and literature, he developed a distinctive visual language that moved effortlessly between reality and imagination.

As Chagall once said, “Great art picks up where nature ends.”

His bold use of colour and unmistakable imagery continue to inspire artists and audiences alike, making his work as relevant today as ever.

Today we celebrate Ernst Wilhelm Nay (1902–1968) — a pioneering force in post-war abstraction and one of the most important voices of German Modernism.

At a time when Germany was redefining itself in the aftermath of the Second World War, Nay was among the first artists to embrace abstraction with conviction and clarity. His work opened up new possibilities for artistic expression, replacing representation with rhythm, movement and a profound sense of freedom.

Reflecting on his artistic practice, Nay wrote in 1952: “Colour is, for me, a formative value. I not only give colour precedence over other artistic means, but my entire artistic practice is determined by colour.”

This conviction shaped a body of work that remains remarkably vital today. Through his relentless exploration of abstraction, Nay expanded the language of painting and established himself as one of the leading European artists of the twentieth century.

On his birthday, we celebrate an artist whose vision continues to resonate across generations.

Today we celebrate the birthday of Karl Hartung (1908–1967), one of the most important figures in abstract sculpture in Germany. His sculpture “Sitzende Figur” (Seated Figure), dating from around 1937/38, is striking proof of just how groundbreaking and courageous he was as an artist. The sculpture is one of his earliest abstract figures, which he even had to hide in special boxes when his Berlin studio was regularly controlled by the N***s in their search for ‘degenerate art’. It symbolises his inner resistance to the aesthetics of National Socialism.

From autumn 2026, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin will present a major exhibition on abstraction in German art during the N**i era, in which Karl Hartung will be represented with various sculptures and drawings. The original plaster model of the “Sitzende Figur” will be on display there.

We are pleased to share that Karl Schmidt-Rottluff’s Juniabend has been restituted by the City of Düsseldorf as part of a fair and just solution.
Once part of the legendary Hess Collection — one of the most renowned private collections of German Expressionism — the painting carries not only outstanding artistic significance, but also a complex history.
Following the restitution, we were able to place Juniabend with a German private collector.
In an exceptionally generous gesture, the collector has chosen to make the work publicly accessible again. The painting is currently on view at the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel, where it can once more be experienced in a museum context.
We are proud to have contributed to this important outcome and would like to thank everyone involved for their trust, professionalism, and commitment.

Exhibition recommendation for 2026: “Konrad Klapheck - Not Made by Human Hand” at Schloss Cappenberg, Selm

The solo exhibition “Not Made by Human Hands” is dedicated to the “machine-objective” images of the Düsseldorf artist Konrad Klapheck (1935–2023). His works transform ordinary everyday objects into symbols of a technologized society—balancing sober precision, surreal depth of field, and subtle social critique. Klapheck’s devices, devoid of any identifiable function, stand symbolically for cultural roles and power structures. His paintings and prints pose central questions about technology, labor, and control—and in their metaphorical amplification remain impressively relevant to this day.
