In her Faux Faux series , Benson cancels the unification of reality and fiction that the artificial flora perfectly suggests by cutting the leaves into geometric, unnatural shapes such as triangles or squares. The process of transformation becomes visible, giving the mass-produced flora each its own individuality. Just as in nature, every detail becomes unique. No element is congruent anymore, creating a more “authentic” rendering of illusory nature by the artist.

What happens when one of the oldest artistic techniques meets digital technology?

Genaro Strobel has developed a remarkable contemporary approach to wood engraving.

His process begins with photography and digitally constructed images. Using high-precision lasers, these images are translated into wood. The grain and structure of the material become part of the composition. Strobel then brings painting and gesture back into the process — creating an ongoing dialogue between machine and hand, precision and chance, digital image and physical material.

I find this particularly interesting at a moment when we are discussing so intensely how technology — and increasingly AI — is changing the way images are created.

Strobel’s work suggests another perspective:
technology does not necessarily replace the physical or the human. It can lead us back to it.

His work has been presented at Kunsthalle Darmstadt and Institut Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt and, in 2026, in La mer est ton miroir at Abbaye Saint-Germain, presented by the Centre Pompidou curated by Pamela Sticht in collaboration with the City of Auxerre. His works are represented in the collections of the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt and Institut Mathildenhöhe.

Genaro is currently Artist in Residence at the Nordic Artists’ Centre Dale in Norway.

Reality is never as stable as it seems. In Fabian Herkenhoener’s paintings, language, gesture and material collide, revealing the fragility, contradictions and ambiguities that shape contemporary life. Between irony and poetry, his works invite us to question what we perceive as reality.
