A gifted teenage blues guitarist in the Jim Crow Deep South is exploited by his gangster cousins, only for their juke joint to come under supernatural siege. Ryan Coogler’s unapologetically flamboyant horror riff on the Robert Johnson legend and the enduring horrors of American racism.

Come rain or shine: Still to come this June at SİNEMA TRANSTOPIA!

After a tentative start to the OPEN AIR season thanks to Berlin’s unpredictable weather, we’re looking ahead to warmer evenings and screenings of Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, a haunting tale of music, myth and race in the Jim Crow South; Fernanda Tovar’s Chicas Tristes (Sad Girlz), an empathetic portrait of teenage friendship and recovery in the aftermath of violence; and Move Ya Body: The Birth of House, Elegance Bratton’s vibrant documentary tracing house music back to Chicago’s Black and q***r communities. Come rain or shine, all events will go ahead as planned; we’ll simply move indoors if the weather has other ideas!

Beyond the cinema, join us for Community Brunch with Mehfil, where South Asian culinary traditions and evolving family recipes come together in a shared vegetarian feast in the SİNEMA Hane garden, or get hands-on with artist Rosi Diaz Roigt’s Folk Masks of Latin America workshop, creating expressive masks inspired by carnival and folk art traditions.

We also look forward to welcoming BAFNET for their annual Community Screening + BBQ, a relaxed evening of curated short films, food and connection celebrating the start of summer, with BIPOCs and allies warmly invited.

The month culminates in a summer highlight: Afrolution Festival by Each One Teach One brings together an artist’s talk with filmmaker Abdenour Zahzah, Olivier Fanon and Dr. Amara Enyia, an open-air concert by surrealist blues poet aja monet & band, and an open air screening of Dr. Frantz Fanon (Chroniques fidèles …).

Ellbogen (Elbow) in the OPEN AIR!

The AMAN AMAN festival weekend comes to a close with an OPEN AIR screening of Aslı Özarslan’s adaptation of Fatma Aydemir’s bestselling novel on Sunday, 15.06., at 21:30.

Hazal is 17 and lives in Berlin-Wedding. Despite countless applications, she can’t find an apprenticeship and isn’t even invited to an interview. On her 18th birthday, she flees alone to the megacity of Istanbul.
Too strong, too angry, and too uncompromising to accept the role of victim, Ellbogen (Elbow) is a portrait of one young woman’s search for her place in the world.

Announcing the full lineup for the AMAN AMAN Drag Cabaret feat. Adir Jan, Prince Emrah & QueerBerg Collective!

On Saturday evening starting at 20:30, we welcome you to a unique live event commissioned for the AMAN AMAN Berlin festival.

Conceived as an outdoor cabaret, the cosmopolitan Kurdesque sound pioneered by musician Adir Jan will intersect with performances by QueerBerg Collective members Prince Emrah, Beyefendi, Hadija Yusufi, and Agnes!

Filmmaker Alexandra Gulea retraces the life of her grandmother Maia, an Aromanian woman born into a semi-nomadic community shaped by displacement, persecution, and political upheaval.

Blending archival footage, performance, ethnographic materials, animation, and imagination, the film weaves together family memory and collective history into a haunting portrait of survival and belonging.

Low-fi high-energy sci-fi worlds: The Critics present Crocodile!

In Kaduna, Nigeria, a city whose namesake crocodiles have nearly vanished, a group of young filmmakers and brothers called The Critics build handmade sci-fi worlds with sewn-together green screens and neighborhood casts. Shot across 13 years, Crocodile follows the brothers as they transform isolation into imagination. Co-directed with award-winning filmmaker Pietra Brettkelly, the film captures their raw, restless energy: political debates, moments of doubt, and the joyful determination to create the future they want to see, one homemade spectacle at a time.

Rebetiko gems, inspirational women past and present, Seyyare Anatolian Women’s Choir: it’s AMAN AMAN BERLIN DAY 3!

Sunday 14. June from 14:30 onwards.

The final day of the AMAN AMAN Berlin festival opens with a food offering by Kübra Sarı before Marika’s Dream perform rebetiko gems by Marika Ninou – born on a ship during her Armenian family’s exile, she became a celebrated star of rebetiko while hiding her heritage to survive.

Ian Nagoski leads a listening session on “Ottoman-American” women recorded on 78rpm discs between 1917 and 1947.

Elona Beqiraj presents Brennende Fingerspitzen, a lecture performance commissioned for AMAN AMAN, interweaving her own texts with music and audiovisual elements.

AMAN AMAN Shorts 2 traces Turkish and Greek migrant life in West Germany through four rarely shown films from the 1970s and 1980s.

The festival closes with a concert by Seyyare – Anatolian Women’s Choir, singing centuries-old folk songs from Anatolia, the Balkans, the Caucasus, and the Middle East in over ten languages.

Following the festival, at 21:30, join us for an OPEN AIR screening of Ellbogen (Elbow) by Aslı Özarslan, the film adaptation of Fatma Aydemir’s bestselling novel. asliozarslan_

Bellydance, Migrant Cuisine, Diaspora Sounds & a Drag Cabaret: Coming up on AMAN AMAN BERLIN DAY 2!

Saturday 13. June from 14:00 onwards.

Day two opens with a joyful bellydance workshop led by non-binary, q***r performer Prince Emrah – all bodies, genders, and backgrounds welcome.

A panel discussion curated by AKEBİ, The Memory of Taste, examines food as an archive of displacement, adaptation, and resistance.

A listening session and conversation explores the hybrid 8th Avenue musical scene of the Ottoman diaspora in New York, where Greeks, Armenians, Sephardic Jews, and Arabs converged.

UNDER THE TABLE by Viron Erol Vert and students from the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee (KHB) - MA Spatial Strategies will come to life with another activation.

Two DJs close the night: Led by Xristina Fotiou, Mastika Sounds bridging the Balkans to the Levante, followed by Alias Shay weaving Raï, Tunisian Mezwed, and Arabic pop.

Viron Erol Vert and students from the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee (KHB) - MA Spatial Strategies, Beo Da Silva, Dré Philippens, Léna Serdijebi, Zéna Chite present UNDER THE TABLE, a multidimensional installation that reimagines Eastern Mediterranean table cultures beneath a monumental 10-meter-long table. zena_ch_

PAYE joins Korhan Erel and Zeynep Ayşe Hatipoğlu for a concert weaving traditional Anatolian sounds with electronic, jazz, and folk influences.music .cemdinler

AMAN AMAN Shorts I brings together five films that circle absence, fracture, and inheritance across the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond.buyuktasciyan_studio .fatoum

The night closes with a DJ set by Greek curator and radio host Dimitra Zina, taking us on a soulful trip through jazz, funk, and disco with references to both sides of the Aegean.
