Nora Bess presents Hale County this Morning, This Evening for team series -TOPIAS!

On Sunday 7. June, .of.commoning project manager Nora Bess will host a one-off screening of RaMell Ross’ Oscar nominated depiction of the American South rarely seen in mainstream media.

An intimate portrait of a Black community in Hale County, Alabama, Ross employs nonfiction filmmaking as a tool to rupture racist aesthetic frameworks that have historically constricted the expression of African American men on film.

Preceded by an introduction by Nora and audio producer Sydney Harper!

The President’s Cake follows Lamia, a nine-year-old Iraqi girl who finds herself obliged to bake a birthday cake in honor of the president, Saddam Hussein. Just another ordinary day in Iraq in the 1990s, she goes on a journey to find the ingredients, fearing, alongside her family, the potential consequences of her failure.

✨The film won the prestigious Camera D’or award at the Cannes Film Festival 2025 and made it onto the Oscars’ short list for best international films.

Fresh from our recent masterclass, this June we are delighted to screen Alain Gomis’ latest offering. DAO follows Gloria as she navigates family, memory, and inheritance across two enmeshed realities: a wedding in a Paris suburb and a mourning ritual in Guinea-Bissau. Blurring past and present, fiction and lived experience, Gomis underlines the perpetually turning cycles of life and death, celebration and grief.

Viv, an aspiring artist from China, finds herself stranded in Berlin after the pandemic and unexpectedly drawn into the city’s alternative cultural scene. Moving between unfamiliar environments and traditional expectations, she navigates shifting perceptions of herself, the world, and China, only to feel increasingly disoriented. Fresh from its premiere screening at this year’s Panoroma, Two Mountains Weighing Down My Chest is a sharp reflection on identity, displacement, and how displacement shapes and unsettle our sense of self.

This session delves into storytelling, visual language, and the role of film in shaping narratives of identity, resistance, and belonging. Through insights into his artistic process, we invite participants to reflect on authorship, representation, and the power of cinematic expression today.
