This session explores the circulation, appropriation and transformation of images, tracing how copying and remix culture challenge traditional notions of authorship and originality. Bringing together works by Oliver Laric and NEOZOON, alongside an installation by Nick Briz.

In this first chapter of our series we look at the image as something unstable: copied, appropriated, manipulated and endlessly recirculated across the web. Rather than belonging to a single author or context, images become shared material, accumulating new meanings as they move between users, platforms and formats. Starting from these earlier post-internet approaches to circulation and remix, each following event will gradually move closer to the present, tracing how our relationship with images has evolved alongside the internet—from the participatory cultures of the early web to today’s fragmented, accelerated and increasingly algorithmic visual landscape.

Oliver Laric is a Berlin-based artist whose practice explores image circulation, authorship, originality, and the fluid boundaries between physical and digital culture. Working across video, sculpture, and digital media, Laric examines how images are copied, transformed, and reinterpreted over time, challenging traditional notions of authenticity and ownership.

NEOZOON is a female artist collective founded in Berlin and Paris in 2009. Their film works are based on the principle of collage and explore sociological questions surrounding speciesism in the Anthropocene. The decontextualization and recontextualization of found footage and YouTube material are recurring elements of their artistic practice.

Nick Briz is an internationally recognized new-media artist, educator and organizer. His work investigates the promises and perils of living in an increasingly digital and networked world. He is an active participant in various online communities and conversations including glitch art, net art, remix culture, digital literacy, hacktivism and digital rights. He's an Assistant Instructional Professor in the Media Art and Design program at the University of Chicago. He also works as creative technologist and has produced award winning work from custom web applications to interactive installations for a wide range of clients.

The End of the Internet – screening and Q&A with director Dylan Reibling and artist Sarah Friend

A film about the invisible operating system of the modern world. From an anarchist squat in Berlin, to a futuristic landscape in Taiwan, to a remote village in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, we encounter a series of figures from the internet decentralization movement. These radicals are confronting internet infrastructure and the unexpected ways it exerts pressure on their way of life.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Dylan Reibling and artist Sarah Friend.

· Dylan Reibling is an award-winning filmmaker and artist who works across several genres – from documentary to narrative work and interactive installations. His documentary work focuses on the intersection of art and technology – using cinematic techniques to draw out the social, political, and economic ramifications of new advancements in computer science.

· Sarah Friend is an artist, researcher, and software developer from Canada and currently based in Berlin. Her work explores games, economics, and the self via engagement with emerging technology.
