The spatial installation by STUDIO8 ARCHITECTS at Porta Nuova, during Milan design week 2026

The installation takes the Chinese tower as its archetype — built entirely through mortise-and-tenon joinery, no screws, no glue, fully reversible. Stackable benches and stools form a modular system that functions independently or assembles into a sculptural tower form. The silhouette carries a deliberate visual echo of Chinese character structure: weight distributed, balance negotiated, meaning built from parts.

Light inside the pieces is diffuse, even, without a focal point — a different logic from Western directional light. Here, light doesn’t guide you somewhere. It simply stays. It becomes a medium for slowing down, for noticing where you are.

The site matters. Porta Nuova’s neoclassical stone — heavy, vertical, permanent — creates a quiet tension with the timber: lighter, horizontal, designed to be taken apart. Not a confrontation. A conversation. The symmetry of the square has been deliberately broken. There is no obvious path through. You have to move slowly, find your own way around it.
A very special thanks to and who helped us throughout this amazing experience.

2026 MDW | STUDIO8 presents new installation.

This Milan Design Week, STUDIO8 brings a new spatial installation to Porta Nuova — where Eastern philosophy meets Western classical architecture.
Faced with the weight and permanence of neoclassical stone, the team responds with quiet restraint: wood and light, inspired by the imagery of a traditional Eastern lantern, flowing gently between the columns like water through cracks — softening rigid order, stretching the visitor’s sense of time.
A dialogue between fullness and negative space. Between permanence and impermanence.
Brought to life in collaboration with JIFANG (几方木作) — translating the natural soul of solid wood into contemporary form — and Ostuni Light, whose precision lighting gives the structure its fluid, breathing presence.

In the master suite, the bathroom wall was set back along the original stucco line to expand the room and carve out an elegant mirrored vanity area. Painted in the clients’ favorite shade of blue, this volume playfully contrasts with the ceiling’s original patina and visually connects the wall to the master bedroom’s decor. The high precision of these interventions was made possible by close collaboration with the team’s local architect in Rome, who directly supervised all construction phases.
Beyond a pre-existing arch lies the living room: a more intimate, secluded area with a comfortable sofa where the family can retreat to relax. Consequently, the kitchen and living room develop on opposite sides of the dining table, serving distinct functions while perfectly balancing conviviality with privacy.

An Intercultural Curated Coexistence; The apartment thrives on highly precise interventions and deliberate cultural contrasts. To preserve the original stucco, drop ceilings for climate control were restricted to hallways, while a custom V-shaped metal element in the entryway transforms mechanical routing into a striking architectural statement.

The spatial simplification unlocked new functional possibilities. The former service room became a guest bathroom; the kitchen-dining zone gained breadth and centrality.

The apartment carried within it the memory of the 1950s: stucco ceilings, ornamental cornices, dark hardwood floors. The marks of an era when quality was still part of the language of domesticity. The clients — a family with twin children — did not want those marks erased. They wanted them reread: more light, more fluidity, fewer walls dividing without reason. The team worked by deliberate subtraction, removing only what obstructed without adding value, liberating the rooms without betraying their character.
“Travertine was not chosen for elegance. It was chosen as an argument — the Rome you cannot see but feel beneath your feet.”
The connective tissue of the project is travertine — selected not as a nod to contemporary taste but as an act of cultural continuity. In the new entrance partition — a permeable bookshelf that replaces a solid wall — the material steps out of the background and into authorship. Here travertine does not clad: it structures. It does not decorate: it argues. Its presence threads through kitchen, living room, bathrooms and dividing walls with the coherence of a narrative that needs no explanation to be understood.

BETWEEN TWO MEMORIES: WHEN ROME OPENS ITS DOORS TO THE EAST
STUDIO8 Architects reinterprets a Roman apartment without erasing its soul, composing a quiet dialogue between ancient local heritage and the cadences of the Orient.
Some projects begin before a single line is drawn. For STUDIO8 Architects — an international practice with Roman roots and an Eastern sensibility — this apartment near Via Cassia was more than a commission. It was a homecoming: a direct reckoning with the city that shaped them. The result is a space that refuses to choose between past and present, between West and East, inviting both to coexist with the ease of an old conversation resumed after years of silence.
