MABSOCIETY BANK functions as the offices and studio of MABSOCIETY, an international curatorial and consultancy

BANK was founded in the former Bank Union Building (est. 1925) located in Shanghai’s historic Bund area. It has since moved to the Former French Concession at Anfu Lu. BANK functions as the offices of MABSOCIETY as well as a commercial gallery. BANK is dedicated to an exhibition program that engages international issues of contemporary art and culture that are meant to provoke discourse on cultura

l history(s), global interests, and current attitudes. We work with international artists, collectors, curators, and institutions to support our program. MABSOCIETY is a hybrid organization that acts as a cultural conduit between China and the rest of the world by producing exhibitions, publications, educational programs, as well as consultation for institutions, and individuals.

BANK is pleased to announce that artist Zheng Haozhong‘s eponymous solo exhibition opened on September 22 at Anaya Art Center North, featuring the artist’s portraits of friends, self-portraits, and studio-themed paintings.

Zheng Haozhong’s works have always focused on people and settings connected to his life. These scenes are almost exclusively drawn from his everyday field of vision, particularly from his studio space. Though artists’ homes and studios have constantly shifted, dispersed, and even disappeared in recent years, Zheng’s painting studio is still frequented by his friends, many of whom are artists, musicians, and writers. 

When viewing Zheng Haozhong’s paintings, we are often drawn in by his bold use of negative space and the freedom of his lines, aspects that are intimately linked to his emphasis on improvisation. The negative space symbolizes the “beginning of time.” Against the backdrop of this detemporalized vacuum, the free-flowing lines carve out the trajectory of his mind during the act of painting. By capturing the people and scenes around him, he breathes a dynamic energy and an emotion reminiscent of jazz into his pictures, using different subjects to explore diverse expressions of the same self. For the artist, painting is about how to return to the self, how to paint the self.

BANK is honored to announce that Shi Hui’s sculpture ’Structure 5’ is featured in the 2024 Jing’an International Sculpture Project (JISP) in Shanghai, China. The exhibition is curated by UCCA Lab from UCCA Center for Contemporary Art and will run from September 28 to December 31.

‘Structure’ series was created by Shi Hui more than 20 years ago. In ‘Structure 5,’ the original paper tubes and wooden frame are changed into stainless steel tubes and frames, and they are stacked in different directions to form a tower. The work was exhibited at the in 2013. The sunlight and bells pouring down on the honeycomb structure of the metal tubes, booming and glittering, just like the resonance of heaven and earth among the grass by the river and the infinite vitality resonating in this symphony, can best make people feel the splendor of all things in the universe.

BANK is pleased to announce the participation of artist .zhang_ in The 8th Jing’An International Sculpture Project (JISP), which takes place primarily at Jing’an Sculpture Park with additional installations along the Jing‘an section of West Nanjing Road and Suzhou Creek from September 28 to December 31.

Centered on the theme ”Echoes Among Us,“ 2024 JISP is curated by UCCA Lab from UCCA Center for Contemporary Art. , director of UCCA, is curatorial advisor. 

Yibei Zhang starts with a proposition, that is, a rethinking of the relationship between artist, material and ideation. In this rethinking, the artist and her materials form the entity world and theentity world frames the ideation world; ideation and material together compose the imagery oithe artist and this imagery leads, chicken and egg-like, to the collaboration of artist and material

‘s art piece ‘DOKU-The Self’ is featured in the upcoming exhibition “目 China. A new generation of artists” at . Lu Yang’s elaborately outfitted and eerily lifelike avatars in his work series ‘DOKU’ are born out of the artist’s distinct and ongoing scientific and philosophical inquiries — an interdisciplinary blend of Buddhism, neuroscience, psychology and modern technology.

Opening on October 9, this collective exhibition at Centre Pompidou shines a spotlight on the upcoming contemporary Chinese art scene with works by 21 artists, drawing a subjective portrait for the first time in France.

Under the theme of the character E (mù), meaning “eye”, with reference both to vision and the eye’s capacity to organise reality, the rich selection of works picked out by the Sino-French curators covers a broad spectrum of practices
- video, painting, sculpture, installations, photography and new media - with emphasis on creations in recent years.

The exhibition will on view from October 9 to
February 3, 2025.

Miguel’s multimedia works resist singular interpretations and probes a merging of diverse cultures the artist simultaneously experiences as both native and foreign. As Payano navigates geographic locations foreign to himself, the artist, a Sinophile, heightens his awareness of language as a crucial bridge connecting people. While having faithfully become an artist whilst living in Beijing for nearly two decades, Payano’s unique vision reconnects with his visual roots as a Dominican-American who grew up in Uptown New York, drawing compositional clues from graffiti and traditional Chinese art forms.
