THE PHOTOGRAPH PRESERVES ITS DISAPPEARANCE

Before movement becomes thought, the body already knows.

In The Unfinished Gesture / The Body Remembers, Marco Benedetti does not attempt to freeze the dancer. Instead, he follows what remains when movement escapes the photograph: a trace, a fracture of time, an unfinished gesture.

The body appears and disappears between presence and memory. Enormous physical energy is held within silence, without a stage, an audience or a fixed narrative.

Movement has no clear beginning or end. The photograph does not complete it. It allows the body to continue beyond the frame.

HOW I CHOOSE ART FOR A SPACE

I don’t choose art simply because its colours match the furniture. I think about the feeling I want to bring into each room.

HALLWAY — Movement
A hallway is a space of transition. Julia Wimmerlin’s Calligraphy series brings rhythm and movement, making even a familiar daily passage feel different.

LIVING ROOM — Presence
The living room can hold a work with a strong voice. Marco Benedetti’s The Unfinished Gesture / The Body Remembers creates energy, conversation and a sense of movement that never fully ends.

DINING ROOM — Connection
This is where people gather, speak and share. Ana Leonor Pita’s Emotions series brings warmth, texture and different emotional states into the room—almost like another conversation around the table.

DRESSING ROOM — Self-reflection
Renate Fluri’s Surface Memory feels deeply connected to the body and the way we see ourselves. I would place it close to a mirror, where its tactile surface can invite a more intimate kind of looking.

BEDROOM — Intimacy
For the bedroom, I chose Julia Wimmerlin’s Nymph. Its softness, ambiguity and dreamlike atmosphere make it a work to live with quietly—in the last moments before sleep and the first moments of the morning.

For me, choosing art is not about filling an empty wall. It is about deciding what feeling you want to live with every day.

HUAN’S WEEKEND SELECTION

This weekend, I chose Renate Fluri’s Surface Memory series.

When I first saw these works, I was drawn to their softness. The wool feels warm and familiar, and the colours are almost comforting. But when I looked longer, I began to notice something more complex beneath that softness.

The series draws from Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, an image that has shaped our understanding of female beauty for centuries. Renate takes that familiar body and rebuilds it in wool. It is no longer smooth, perfect or passive. It has texture, weight and its own presence.

As a woman, this speaks to me personally. We learn very early how our bodies are expected to look and how they may be judged by others. These works make me think about what happens when a woman’s body is no longer created for someone else’s gaze.

I can imagine Surface Memory in a bedroom or dressing room, a private space where we see ourselves every day. There, the work becomes more than an object of beauty. It becomes a quiet reminder that our bodies carry experience, memory and stories that belong to us.

That is why I would choose to live with this work. It is soft without being fragile, beautiful without trying to be perfect, and deeply personal without giving everything away.

Every fold carries a trace of touch, tenderness and resistance. The surface does not hide what it has experienced. It remembers.

ART MOMENT WITH HUAN · EPISODE 2

What does it mean to feel at home in your own body?

When we curated UNBOUND BODIES, we wanted to look beyond the body as a physical form. Our bodies carry memories, emotions, inherited stories and experiences that are not always visible from the outside.

Bringing together photography, textile, sculpture, film and experimental mixed media, the exhibition explores identity as something fluid, constantly shaped, disrupted and rebuilt.

Julia Wimmerlin’s photographs transform the body into movement, light and abstraction. Marco Benedetti captures gestures between presence and disappearance. Renate Fluri’s textile works hold memory through material, touch and tension. Guest artist Ana Leonor Pita approaches the body through emotion, vulnerability and transformation. Bo&Joli extend this conversation through sculpture and film, sharing their own interpretation of the body and opening another space for reflection within the exhibition.

Each artist speaks in a different visual language, yet they share one question:

How much of who we are is held quietly within the body?

For me, UNBOUND BODIES is not about presenting one definition of identity. It is about creating space for complexity, for what we reveal, what we protect and what continues to change within us.

HUAN’S WEEKEND CHOICE | GALERIE SECHS

This weekend, I chose Julia Wimmerlin’s Calligraphy series. Julia Wimmerlin Art

What touches me most is how these works make the body feel both present and absent. A few delicate black lines are enough to suggest a figure, yet so much remains unspoken.

They remind me that we are never defined by a single outline. We are always changing, becoming, and leaving space for new parts of ourselves to appear.

I imagine these three works living together in a quiet corner of a home. In a bedroom, hallway or living room, they would bring a sense of calm and intimacy. From a distance, they appear beautifully minimal. The longer you look, the more personal they become.

For me, these are not simply images of the body. They are images about vulnerability, freedom and the courage to remain unfinished.

They are works I would want to live with, works that give me something different each time I return to them.
