A look back at Sunday’s artist talk at 532 Gallery, part of Kunsttage Basel ’26.

Morgan Ogilvie and Koji Nakamura came together to talk about their work and the ideas unfolding in On a Bit of Earth Which Had No Name.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the afternoon. A special thank you to Morgan for traveling from Tennessee, and to Koji and Meena for coming all the way from Tokyo!

Miracle Taro just turned 10.

As his cat gets older, Shuto Mizukami wanted to make something about him. He prefers small things, so he painted a tiny portrait of Taro (named by his mother) and gave it a house.

Cat House Chain takes its title from Umberto Boccioni’s Futurist work Head + House + Light.

First look — more to come.

Meet Mouse.

Another face from Morgan Ogilvie’s Obstinate Toy Soldiers.

With its cooler palette and flashes of candy-bright color, Mouse carries the same quiet unease beneath its playful surface. Painted alla prima, the figure seems to hover somewhere between costume, character, and memory.

Mouse (2026) joins Space Cowboy II in Basel this month as part of On a Bit of Earth Which Had No Name, opening 28 August at 532 Gallery.

“We don’t see things as they are. We see them as we are.” — Anaïs Nin, quoted by Danny Rolph in a new studio conversation with and LARA JULIAN , via USA Art News .

Two London painters talk colour as force, doubt as method, and why the hand still matters in an age of digital mediation — from Rolph’s Triplewall works to Julian’s layered abstractions. Full conversation linked in bio.

We are pleased to share that Elio Rodríguez Valdés is included in My Past: Afro-descendant Contributions to Cuban Art, currently on view at the Lowe Art Museum, University of Miami.
Accompanying the landmark publication by Alejandro de la Fuente and Cary Aileen García Yero, the exhibition revisits two centuries of Cuban art through the work of Afro-descendant artists whose contributions have often been overlooked. Through research, archival recovery, and curatorial inquiry, My Past expands the canon of Cuban visual culture while foregrounding the depth and complexity of Afro-Cuban artistic production.
Within this broader historical dialogue, Rodríguez Valdés’s sculptural practice approaches the body as a site of memory, transformation, desire, and vulnerability—contributing to ongoing conversations around identity, cultural inheritance, and visibility.

Susana Guerrero
The Female Open Body | El cuerpo abirto de la hembra

Through braided fiber, woven metal, and skeletal forms, The Female Open Body unfolds as a landscape of transformation. Bodies open, unravel, and reorganize themselves; wounds become sites of knowledge, and fragmentation gives way to new forms of continuity.

Drawing from mythology, ritual, and processes of material alchemy, Guerrero imagines the female body not as a fixed entity but as a living system in perpetual recomposition—capable of preserving memory, generating life, and renewing itself through cycles of loss and regeneration.

Currently on view at 532 Gallery Thomas Jaeckel, Basel.
