KAKABEL/Erika Burton

Where The Whim Goes

Starting over, is hard to do, even more so when one has worked for years to acquire an artist’s reputation, but divorce, and relocation has led Kakabel to desire a fresh start. Being the niece of two well-known sculptors, Bill Clawson and Paul Wellington, Kakabel had early exposure to the world of art. Spending most of her lifetime

mucking about with clay, sand or drawing she has fed that addiction to create. Driven by observing how various techniques were achieved in cross-stitch, classic paintings and animation, she is mostly self-taught. Much to the dismay of various custodians, math and geography teachers, Erika was prone to “experimenting” on many desks, and homework assignments. Through the patience of several Saunders Secondary School art teachers, she learned the basics of art, and promptly forgot everything she was ever taught about art history. Sorry, Bruce Flowers, Sandra Robinson, and Bruce Lee! It’s not YOUR fault! Due to lack of storage space, much to the disappointment of her Uncles and mentor Bruce Flowers, (another sculptor), Kakabel decided to follow in her OTHER mentor Bruce Lee’s footsteps and become a painter. Then she discovered the joys of Sculpting Paste, and the fun challenges of painting OVER a bas relief to “hide’ it, so now she can feed her desires for challenge in painting, and her need to sculpt- without having to resort to cake! She decided to take her art from the realm of “hobby” into a “career”. She met and married Kevin, her partner in the design company, Hawthorne On Display, and unfortunately after ten years the dissolution of both her marriage and the company led her to relocate and start over. Kakabel works in various mediums from sculpting in ceramic clay, and polymer clays to carving stone. She also paints, and sketches, and uses conte, water colours, acrylic paints and oil pastels.
