Westbank Museum We are the Westbank Museum. Come learn about our community's history, or let us help you make your own! Admission is by donation. Kids!

Guided tours are available upon request. Come for our beaver and bear scavenger hunt. The Westbank Museum was established in 1978 by Clare and Billie Small to provide a repository for artifacts and documents of the settlement of the area. With these items, we generate historic and cultural programs and preserve the local settler heritage. Since its founding, the collection has grown to over 6000 artifacts and is continually expanding through donations. Our primary interest is in artifacts that are directly from and related to Westbank's heritage and pioneering families. These items have been generously donated by members of our community, pioneering families, and collectors. We consider all donations with respect to the item, its heritage, and the donor. Admission is by donation: $5 per person is the recommendation.

Formative Friday:

Today is Leif Erikson Day! This day celebrates the Norse explorer, who was the first recorded European to set foot on continental North America around 1000 AD. Why Leif ended up in what was referred to as Vinland in Norse literature is debated. Some sources say that he and his companions were blown off course during a return voyage to Greenland from Norway, while others say that it was a deliberate expedition following sightings of a landmass beyond Greenland. While where they landed exactly is still up to speculation, often thought to be Newfoundland, arguments have been made that it could have been anywhere between there and northeastern New Brunswick. After a brief time exploring the unfamiliar coastline that they had found themselves on, they set sail to Greenland, where they spread the news of Vinland. Leif himself would never return, though other Norse explorers from Greenland and Iceland would unsuccessfully attempt to form settlements there as soon as 10 years later. The presence of Norse explorers is confirmed by sites like L'Anse aux Meadows in present-day Newfoundland.
