Automat at Antimatter 2026

Some of the most rewarding and memorable experiences at Antimatter are artist talks, Q&As and informal social events with local and visiting filmmakers. Since 2020, Automat has offered an additional, virtual option for participants to engage with peers and audiences.

This year Automat offers 14 new projects—gifts from the extraordinary artists whose work we are fortunate to screen in this year’s festival. These short self-portrait/profile videos join dozens already available, providing spontaneous, revealing, witty and poetic insights into their lives and practices and adding to an archive of the festival and the artists it comprises.

At Antimatter we consider that community is a process—active vs. static, created vs. proscribed. We are extremely grateful for these connective offerings from the world of moving image and to the artists who made and shared them with us, and now with you.

The 29th edition of Antimatter opens in just one week! Along with screenings which can be experienced in-person and online we have four public media installations on display that can be seen downtown from October 15th through 25th.

The Legacy Art Gallery (window) will host Winston Hacking's Duotone Handshake. In an experimental film investigating a new form of surface transformation through folding and collage, concealed narratives begin to unfold through a relatively simple process. The film literally unpacks meaning where each crease reveals an image complexity that was hidden beneath the seemingly flat surface.

Lilan Yang’s 未命名菲林消毒怬划 [Untitled Film Disinfection Project I] can be seen in the Deluge transom window. “Censorship is the mother of metaphor.” Guided by state disinfection protocols, this 16mm structural film applies chlorine to imageless celluloid—transforming the chemical “sanitization” of film into a physical enactment of censorship, memory erasure and artistic resistance in response to China’s zero-COVID era.

Kelly Egan’s Of Swallows is installed in the Deluge entrance foyer. Egan writes “A swallow’s eye is longer than other birds. Their visual acuity is said to resemble Raptors. For sailors, swallows are a good omen signifying a close shore. My father loved birds. Since his passing I've felt afloat. Lost and unanchored. At sea in overwhelming emotions. I close my eyes and look for swallows, as metaphorical groundings.”

And finally, the Millie’s Lane Window Gallery features Bocheng Zhang’s Millstone. Millstone takes its cue from the workers’ steady, exact grinding—motion as endurance. Projection, workshop tools and mirrors made during the Cultural Revolution assemble into a site-responsive “vision machine” that settles inside the workshop and learns its rhythm. The objects collaborate, but they also scrape and strain against one another, marking the space with traces—of desire, of longing. Out of this labouring friction, a live-captured interactive image is projected back into the room, calling up a spectre of shared memory.

Little Skies: Moving Image Art for Youth
November 7 & 8, 2026
Deluge Contemporary Art, Victoria BC Canada

Produced by the team behind the acclaimed Antimatter [media art] festival, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2027.
We believe that children possess the openness, imagination and unbounded nature to optimally interact with experimental film and video, or artist’s moving image work. With Little Skies we aim to bring them together. The inaugural event will be held this November 7 and 8 in Victoria, Canada and online.

Little Skies will feature programs of works lovingly selected for a young audience and screened in a friendly, comfortable environment, as well as a hands-on workshop and other activities.

Little Skies will introduce a new and critically formative audience to this expansive and dynamic art form to the benefit of both.
We are looking for moving image works for inclusion in the first iteration of Little Skies. They should be suitable for children and youth, roughly kindergarten to pr***en. Works should not be longer than 10 minutes, and should have been produced in the past decade. Works to be included will be confirmed by October 2, 2026. Screening fees paid.
