'Exposed!' Members Exhibition
Deadline: October 3

The annual members exhibition at the VPAG celebrates the creativity, talent, and diverse artistic practices of our membership. The exhibition offers members the opportunity to present their work in a professional gallery setting and share their practice with the wider community.

This is a non-commercial exhibition; works will not be offered for sale through the gallery. One artwork per artist may be submitted and delivered to the gallery on or before October 3, 2026 to be included.

Join us for August programming at the Gallery, taking place the second-last week of the month! We have some great creative activities for kids, teens, and families coming up.

Mini Artists - Blackout Pages
August 20 | 10-11:30am
Inspired by Mary Kavanagh’s exhibition Opera Obscura, young artists will explore words and pictures by selecting certain ones from pages of books and blacking out the rest while learning about physical books and words or shapes through art-making.

Teen Crit Club - Open Studio
August 21 | 3:30-5pm
Bring by an art project that you're working on or create something new using our supplies, while receiving guidance from experienced artists. Crit Club is free, includes snacks, and is open to youth ages 13–18.

Family Saturday - Blackout Poetry
August 22 | 1-2:30pm
Experiment with giving pages of old books a new life by blacking out certain words and keeping others, inspired by Mary Kavanagh’s exhibition and its themes of knowledge and books in this hands-on activity for all ages. Individuals: $3/members $5/non-members, Families (4 or more): $10/members $14/non-members.

New Date - Join us for an artist talk with Mary Kavanagh, where she will video call in to the Vernon Public Art Gallery on Thursday, August 20 from 6-7PM.

Kavanagh will share insights into her exhibition 'Opera Obscura', a large-scale installation made up of approximately 2,000 deaccessioned books, hand-inked and arragned in a dense griddded field, and a companion series of photographs. Monumental in scale and elegiac in tone, the project registers the slow erosion of the material record, the institutions entrusted with its keeping, and the accelerating forces that threaten both.

Mary Kavanagh is a Professor of Art and Board of Governors Research Chair at the University of Lethbridge. Her projects are developed through fieldwork, residencies, military embeds, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States, Australia, and Europe. Kavanagh is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a Member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.

We are inviting community members, evacuees, and anyone seeking a welcoming place to visit the gallery's pop-up Creative Corner. For the next few weeks, in response to the recent wildfires, the Caroline Galbraith Gallery has been reimagined into a place of respite, with drop-in self-guided art activities, art films playing, and an art reading nook furnished by Gleaners, all available free of charge.

'Your Absence is Mineral' by Sarah Steeves will be opening later, on September 1st, so the Creative Corner will remain in place until August 26th. We hope the gallery can offer a place where people can take a moment to rest and refocus through art during this challenging time.

Feel free to stop by anytime during our regular hours and check out our activities or bring your own supplies and work on your art in the space.

In light of the ongoing wildfire situation affecting communities throughout the North Okanagan, and in support of those impacted, the Vernon Public Art Gallery has decided to postpone this week's public opening reception for 'Opera Obscura' by Mary Kavanagh and 'Your Absence is Mineral' by Sarah Steeves on August 6 and artist talk with Mary Kavanagh on August 8.

While the gallery will remain open during regular hours, we recognize that many members of our community are currently focused on supporting family, friends, neighbours, and evacuees. Several participating artists and guests have also postponed travel in consideration of the demands being placed on local accommodations and emergency resources.

During this time, we would like to invite community members and evacuees who are feeling exhausted by the toll of this emergency to visit the gallery at no cost and experience a moment of respite.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and we extend our gratitude to the first responders, emergency personnel, and volunteers working to keep our communities safe. We look forward to celebrating these exhibitions with our community when the time is right and will announce new event dates as soon as circumstances allow.
