Happy Birthday to Shary Boyle ๐ŸŽˆ

Through fantastical figures, dreamlike narratives, and haunting visions of environmental change, Boyleโ€™s work invites us to reflect on the beauty, fragility, and uncertainty of the world around us.

To mark the occasion, weโ€™re revisiting our catalogue for ๐˜œ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜Œ๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต: ๐˜ˆ๐˜ณ๐˜ต ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜Œ๐˜ฏ๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฎ with a newly shared excerpt by writer Ruth Jones that explores Boyleโ€™s apocalyptic imagery, environmental anxieties, and richly imaginative practice.

Born on this day in 1943, Carl Beam (1943โ€“2005) played a seminal role in the unfolding story of Indigenous art in North America.

A formidable intellect and relentless innovator, Beam led a generation of artists away from the reiteration of traditional motifs toward explicitly political critiques of colonialism โ€” forging a bold hybrid of artistic languages drawn from Pop art, photojournalism, archival imagery, and his own family albums.

In ๐˜•๐˜ฆ๐˜ฐ-๐˜Ž๐˜ญ๐˜บ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ ๐˜๐˜, his austere profile confronts that of a chief from the early days of settlerโ€“Indigenous contact. Alongside them: the buffalo, millions of which were exterminated as settlers pushed west, and images of the 1981 assassination of Anwar Sadat. Compressed into a single composition, these images document our human capacity for brutality, and invite us to consider our place in the flow of history.

An artist, writer, and critic, Bess Larkin Housser Harris (1890โ€“1969) was deeply embedded in Canada's early modernist circles โ€” exhibiting alongside some of the country's most influential painters and shaping conversations around modern art at a pivotal moment in Canadian art history.

Working largely without formal training, she developed a bold, intuitive style rooted in a deep spiritual connection to nature. Yet despite her significant contributions, her legacy remains lesser known than it deserves to be.

We're taking a closer look at her life and work in McMichael Magazine. ๐Ÿ”— Read the full article โ†’ https://mcmichael.com/artist-spotlight/artist-spotlight-bess-larkin-housser-harris/

Join artists Alexa Kumiko Hatanaka, Michelle Sound, and Sky Glabush for a panel exploring contemporary approaches to landscape in Canadian art.

Working across painting, textiles, installation, and material-based practices, the artists will reflect on how land, memory, identity, and lived experience inform their work today.

Presented in connection with ๐˜๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ ๐˜ˆ๐˜ช๐˜ณ: ๐˜•๐˜ฆ๐˜ธ ๐˜ˆ๐˜ค๐˜ฒ๐˜ถ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜น๐˜ต, this conversation considers the many ways artists are reimagining relationships to place, environment, and belonging.
