โ€œHow does something continue to exist? The work begins with the idea that nothing exists entirely on its own, but takes shape through contact, pressure, time, and surrounding conditions. To continue does not necessarily mean to remain the same. Through relation, things shift, respond, and leave traces that become conditions for what follows. The installation brings objects, materials, and space into this ongoing process, where no element remains entirely separate or unchanged. Rather than representing life, the work considers how existence might be sustained through relation.โ€

โ€œAirplanes are extraordinary inventions: giant machines that allow humans to fly. They embody technological progress, mobility, and the desire to overcome corporeal limitations. Yet airplanes are also imitations. Their forms borrow from birds, translating flight into engineering. Unlike birds, however, airplanes cannot experience the sky they move through. They travel within it without ever feeling it, never arriving at it.

๐‘ฉ๐’–๐’…๐’ˆ๐’Š๐’† ๐‘ฏ๐’†๐’‚๐’—๐’†๐’ considers transformation as an ongoing condition of longing. The airplane remains suspended between departure and arrival, mimicry and transcendence. The budgie dreams of becoming larger, the body dreams of becoming weightless, and the plane dreams of being alive.โ€

โ€œ๐’€๐’๐’–๐’“ ๐’‡๐’‚๐’„๐’†, ๐’š๐’๐’–๐’“ ๐’†๐’š๐’†๐’”, ๐’‚๐’๐’… ๐’š๐’๐’–๐’“ ๐’Ž๐’๐’–๐’•๐’‰ uses painting, analogue film, and found archives to examine memory, intimacy, and the concept of the family. The materiality of gel transfers on 16mm film and oil on burlap disrupts the comprehensibility and indexicality of found imagery. Familial memorabilia are mnemonic devices; it allows for investigation and re-visitation of people and places, offering a โ€˜truthfulโ€™ depiction of the private sphere. The labour of painting and transfers projects a conflicting sense of care and affection onto the inherently unfamiliar subjects. Ultimately, familial photographs and home videos are guarded; they obscure the complicated intersection of broader dominant networks, ideologies, and systems that shape the relationships that make up a family.โ€

โ€œScission, referring to the act of dividing a thing or a group into separate parts, becomes a framework for formal structures such as electrical transmission towers, and power lines that extend endlessly forward, diverging and creating a constant line of movement. Through an uncertainty to definitively pinpoint what may be happening, this unstable process of becoming with no visible end point is navigated through a flow of information and movement, where the self is often in a state of being cut, split and continually reconstructed. Overlays of wires and theological sculptures serve as a mediation onto the blindness that occurs through resolving what it means to progress and construct and deconstruct oneself. My paintings turn this into a meditative process, attempting to slow down and escape a constant movement.โ€

Asia Ruggiero is a Toronto-based curator, artist, and arts worker. Her practice is interested in care, identity, memory, and creating meaningful connections through art. She studied Criticism and Curatorial Practice with a minor in Art and Social Change at OCAD University and has experience working across artist-run, curatorial, and collections-based spaces. As the Chair of Xpaceโ€™s Board of Directors, she is excited to support emerging artists and contribute to Torontoโ€™s artist-run community.

Owen Kosmala is a Writer, Curator, and Artist born in Portland, United States now living and working in Tkaronto, Canada. As a recent OCADU graduate, he is excited to serve XPACE and its community.

Zaza Wong (she/they) is a practicing multidisciplinary artist, photographer, and curator. Born (2005) and raised in Hong Kong, now based in Tkaronto, Canada. Zaza is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Criticism and Curatorial Practices and a Minor in Photography at OCAD University. Zazaโ€™s creative practice is their primary channel of communication, self exploration and expression; an alternative to using verbal or textual words. Through cross-disciplinary and conceptual approaches, their works revolve aroundย  uncovering and re-telling personal experiences. Story-telling becomes a crucial part in Zazaโ€™s approach to curation as well.

Last but not least, please welcome our final OCAD University Graduate Resident, Hayeon Lee, who will be taking over the Project Space!

โ‹†.เณƒเฟ”๐ŸŒธ*:๏ฝฅ

Hayeon Lee is a Korean interdisciplinary artist based in Toronto and Seoul, working across installation, sculpture, sound, video, and ceramics. Her recent work began by exploring Gyeongcheong (listening) as a material and spatial condition, creating situations in which clay, vibration, gravity, and uncertainty actively shape the work rather than treating materials as passive tools. Building on this approach, her current practice expands toward how objects and environments continue to exist by affecting and being affected through relationships. She recently received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Art, Media and Design from OCAD University.

Hayeon will be using Xpace as a studio for the next month, creating an exciting new exhibition that will begin on September 5, with an opening reception on September 11.

Hayeon Song (b. 2003, Seoul) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Toronto. Working across sculpture, writing, durational installations, and drawing, her practice explores the unstable relationship between sincerity and ambition. She has exhibited in both commercial galleries and community-driven events, including at Gagnรฉ Contemporary and in the basement of Prehistoria.

Hayeon will be using Xpace as a studio for the next month, creating an exciting new exhibition that will begin on September 5, with an opening reception on September 11.

Natalie Obregon is an interdisciplinary artist working in Toronto, Ontario. She is a recent graduate of OCAD University with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting. We are welcoming in our 2026 OCADU Graduate Residents this week, and we are excited to introduce you to Gabby Gerbasi, who will be taking over our Window Space!

หšห–๐“ขึดเป‹๐ŸŒทอ™ึ’โœงหš.๐ŸŽ€เผ˜โ‹†

Gabriella Gerbasi (b.2004) is a representational oil painter living and working in Toronto. Her practice pulls from a vast archive of physical and electronic media, overlapping magazines and digital photos as a way to observe the portrayal of the figure. It is through her paintings where these multiple platforms can meet and are reflected.

Gabby will be using Xpace as a studio for the next month, creating an exciting new exhibition that will begin on September 5, with an opening reception on September 11.
