"My journey with Propeller started in November 2007. My studio mate Frances Ferdinands suggested we apply for an exhibition together when Propeller was on Queen West. We did. It was not only a success, but a revelation on how dynamic and wonderful the gallery members were. I shortly after that became a member too. Their energy, their ideas, their support and their involvement taught me so much. In 2010, when I had my first solo show there, they agreed that I could erect a real hydro pole, floor to ceiling, in the gallery; yes, the members welcomed ground-breaking ideas to come to life. And still do. Congratulations on 30 years of INSPIRATION." – Pat Dumas-Hudecki

🖼 "Shadows 4" by Ian Revell, part of our current exhibition Propeller 30!

"I arrived at Propeller in 2002 when I was looking for an internship upon finishing an Arts Admin program at Humber. This was not my first encounter with Propeller, but was the start of my true connection with it. Welcomed in by Emelie Changur, I became Propeller’s second Gallery Administrator when the collective was being lifted by a rising tide of interest in the upstart West Queen West Gallery District. I was inspired and overwhelmed by the talent in the membership and the excitement in Toronto’s art scene– what a time! Can’t claim much credit for anything but was happy to help, and to be involved in facilitating the visions of some great artists- and many absolute blowout parties. Propeller is also how I met my life partner Elizabeth Fearon and for that I am eternally grateful. Everyone who has helped Propeller reach this milestone should be proud." – Ian Revell

"I joined Propeller Art Gallery during the pandemic's uncertainty, a time that profoundly reminded me of art's vital role. From those personal and global challenges emerged new visions, culminating in the joyful achievement of securing our permanent space. This period inspired my piece, The Long Haul. It reflects my ongoing journey as an artist, supported by like-minded peers dedicated to propelling one another forward. "Propeller Art Gallery has meant a great deal to me, not only as an exhibition space, but as a place where I truly found community.
I have known Propeller since around the time it moved to Queen Street West from its first home on Spadina Avenue, and from the beginning it felt welcoming and alive with creative energy. I already knew some of the members, and through Propeller I made many new friends who became important parts of my life.
Joining in 2015 and having my first solo exhibition there in April 2016 was a deeply meaningful moment for me. I learned so much from the people around me, from their work, their experience, and their generosity. Propeller has given me inspiration, friendship, and a sense of belonging that I will always value. ✨ Meet Tracy Thomson, one of Propeller Art Gallery’s talented artist members!

Tracy is a painter/mixed media artist, living and working in Toronto. Creating since the age of 4 with chalk, sharp pencils for narrative drawing, black marker and finally to her parent’s relief…paint. Graduated AOCA, studied Fine Art,  received the Nora E Vaughn Award and in 4th year, switched to Experimental Art, “to work large and explore abstract space.” She is a member of the CSPWC, has exhibited throughout Canada and Italy.

“Life’s ambiguities, the spaces between, the “unseen”…Creates a sense of wonder, to paint what I “don’t know”. I’m enormously moved by nature in all its mysterious complexities and human nature, the resilience and compassion is life-affirming. Science, technology, climate change, the process of decimation and the remediation of our planet, also inform my art. Otherwise, I’m a happy camper with one foot in reality and the rest of me, elsewhere! Hence my symbolic reconstructions of fictional locales, where amorphic beings, invented vegetation and dwellings, often float to the surface of their own volition. Inspiring imagined interior and exterior spaces, as a hopeful metaphor for the human condition.”

"I was a Propeller Gallery member when the Gallery was located on Queen Street and then moved to Abell Street. I joined the group of wonderful people, very creative and talented. I had a couple solo exhibitions that were very successful and unforgettable. 🖼 "Pink Summer Chair" by Tania Costa, part of our current exhibition Propeller 30!

"Propeller has been a meaningful part of my journey as an artist. It was where I participated in my first group gallery exhibition after graduating from OCAD University, which made the transition from student to practicing artist feel real. In 2020, I received the Propeller Art Gallery Emerging Artist Award, which gave me the opportunity to become more involved with the gallery and its community.

Through that experience, I learned a lot—not only about exhibiting work, but also about what it means to be part of an artist-run centre. Propeller gave me valuable opportunities early in my career and helped shape my understanding of artistic practice, collaboration, and community. Returning as an alum and exhibiting work here again feels especially meaningful because of the role Propeller has played in my development as an artist." – Tania Costa

"I became a member of Propeller largely by happenstance, and over the years I’ve tried to contribute in the way I know best—by providing graphic design support and helping the gallery wherever I could.
Although Propeller has a relatively modest voice within Toronto’s art community, its members have consistently produced ambitious and engaging exhibitions. Against the odds, the gallery has earned considerable respect. I’d like to think that, in my own small way, I have played a part in that journey." – Keijo Tapanainen

✨️ Keijo definitely played a significant part in our journey, not only is he Propeller's longest continuing member, but he designs many of our exhibition invitations (including the one for this exhibition)!

🖼 "Glee Club (from the Musical Bananas series)" by Patricia Bond

"Propeller Gallery has been a lifeline to me since the 1990s. In an old brick factory space on King Street West, as an early member of Propeller, I held an exhibition of still lifes on weathered plywood. Then again on Queen Street and now the vibrant space on Abell Street. There has always been wonderful engagement among the members and alumni because of the level of understanding that develops as artists. The artist's talks featured are always enriching. I'm happy for this anniversary celebration to submit a brand new piece, Glee Club, an exploration of line and form with such compatible materials. My impression is that the structure of the dark banana skin weaving mimics the staff lines as a necessary serious structural foundation which can then support multiple moods and playful forms of music.
