Koffler Arts welcomes Gord Peteran to Koffler301 for an exhibition curated by Adjunct Curator David Liss, Lessons in Objectology (Sept 24 - Nov 8).

Gord Peteran creates compelling and highly inventive artworks using materials, processes and vocabularies that intersect with furniture-making, sculpture, assemblage, craft and decorative and contemporary arts that are at once all and none of these.

The work is characterized by playful juxtapositions between the strange and the familiar, the benign and the sinister. These apparent contradictions generate an uneasy tension and uncertainty that confound our instinctive attempts to classify and define our surroundings.

Detached from their original functions and contexts, objects can acquire an often-overlooked psychological current that runs beneath the seemingly mundane material surfaces of the worlds we build for ourselves.

Join us for the launch of author and artist Danila Botha’s debut graphic novel, Vidal.

Vidal is part Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, part Art Spiegelman’s Maus. Botha's prose and artwork capture the Sephardic Jewish experience through an entirely fresh and unique lens, bringing hope to untold stories that have been trapped in time.

The evening will feature a conversation with Botha and acclaimed Canadian author and composer Gary Barwin, followed by a reading and performance by Botha and Barwin. Meet Botha, explore a selection of her original artworks that will be on view in our gallery, and purchase a signed copy of Vidal.

Next week, choreographer Neshama Nashman will be in residence at Koffler Arts with dancers Irene Yang and Anton Tcherny developing new work ahead of its presentation at the Banff Centre’s BISQUE Festival.

Our new gallery Koffler301 will transform into a studio where movement, music, and visual space come together as the work takes shape. We’re excited to welcome this creative process into our space and to share a glimpse of what’s to come.

Koffler Arts welcomes Governor General’s Award winning artist Cybèle Young to the Koffler Gallery for the international debut of her exhibition, Kamiphony, curated by Zoë Foster.

At the centre of the exhibition is a pantheon of kinetic paper machines. Over time, each sculptural object performs a small, repetitive action. Lighting and sound amplification accompany their movements, creating a shifting tableau of motion, dancing shadows, and sound.

These kinetic sculptures are situated within a long tradition that has championed uselessness. From Aristotle to Baroque automata, from Bruno Munari to Jean Tinguely’s anarchic sculptures, philosophers and artists have repeatedly returned to this idea. By engaging with these historical debates, Young invites viewers to consider our present-day predicament. The sculptures’ refusal to be efficient mirrors a contemporary moment in which we are re-examining the value of work as a result of COVID-19.

For Young, this project is also deeply personal. She began creating the work in response to her experience of menopause, during which her body felt as though it was “breaking down.” This experience inspired her to explore the space between what no longer works and something new that has yet to take form.

The machines’ repetitive movements foreshadow that something will – over time – emerge. Their persistence draws viewers into a public ritual where repetition itself becomes a form of meaning-making. In conceiving this work, Young was also influenced by her great-uncle, the composer Colin McPhee, who, while encountering ritual traditions in Bali, observed that usefulness is not measured by output or progress but by duration and presence.

As visitors move through the exhibition, the sculptural machines become a mischievous orchestra. They invite us to reimagine our world together and question its parts.

Plague Crystals offers a contemporary interpretation of the ten plagues, enclosing symbolic representations of our collective modern challenges within exquisite crystal vessels.

Fragile yet resilient, these structures become architectures of care and persistence.

Discover Plague Crystals this weekend at the Koffler Gallery.
