What Did You Do at School Today?

SCIENCE
The Goal: to Create, Innovate and Think Critically

Students gain first-hand experience in the scientific method through lab experimentation and enquiry-based learning throughout the year. After working together to conduct group labs and individual research projects, they embark on a literature review on a topic of interest to them. This results in a culminating science fair project that requires them identify a new avenue of research and demonstrate their understanding of all aspects of the scientific method. Presentations include peer and self review to determine the veracity of their hypothesis and findings.

Academic studies include units on botany, zoology, anatomy, chemistry and physics.

Field work is conducted in conjunction with The Pine Project and growing experiments in the school’s greenhouse and community garden.

The Lyceum is a fully immersive, educational experience. Students learn to think critically and workshop their ideas through immersive practice. No “smartboards”. No workbooks. No one-size-fits-all approach to student engagement. As we gear up for the coming school year, we will share our curriculum stories in different subject areas and our students’ reflections on their experience here.

VISUAL ART
As a vehicle for constructive, critical thinking, art is in everything we do. Students learn how to consider a problem and manifest a solution. They study drawing, painting, analogue photography, assemblage and collage with guidance from our community of practising artists.

Through their student bakery business, students fund an art residency on Gibraltar Point and in June, exhibit their work in The Lyceum Gallery as their culminating project.

The Lyceum just turned seven. Inspired by integrated spaces in London and Prague which embrace galleries as sites for innovation in art and education, we set out to create a space that we hoped would become a community hub, a showcase for contemporary Canadian art and an education incubator. The Lyceum opened seven years ago with a projection of student work through the windows with just a couple of us outside on the sidewalk. Since then, we’ve had the chance to showcase some of Toronto’s finest contemporary artists and have welcomed all kinds of people through the doors, who have brought their enthusiasm and talent to the project to create a most unique environment to work and learn in. As we look forward to announcing our fall program next week, a pause to thank the artists who bring their stories to these walls. First Impressions
Creative Uncommon Summer Camp
Ink Story

This week, we chose First Impressions as our theme because all ten camp participants were new to The Lyceum. As the week unfolded, many stories were told. Here is one of them.
After harvesting mulberries and currants from our garden plot at Garrison Creek Community Garden, we processed them in studio into ink. Students learned about the ink making process: predicting a pigment from a base material, blending a colorant and vehicle, shifting the Ph balance and securing a hue with binder, stabilizing it with thyme oil, then locking it in with a mordant to apply it to fabric. Each student tried various ink experiments on paper and cotton cloth and received a bottle of each ink to take home for future use.

While attending the ink-making process, here’s what else we got up to:

-lino block designs/stamping
-cyanotypes
-hand-made pasta
-sushi rolls
-exquisite co**se collaborations
-anthropomorphic character designs

Space is the Place!

Located in the historic Chocolate Factory Lofts, across from Trinity Bellwoords Park, The Lyceum Gallery is one of the last remaining large gallery spaces on Queen West. The gallery boasts 500 square feet of clear area space with windows looking onto the street from two sides as well as three hanging walls with gallery fixturing, diffused spotlighting and projection capabilities. By day, the space is bathed in natural light and at night, it is transformed into a magical lightbox lit from the inside.

We have hosted dinners, cocktail parties, gallery shows, lectures, book launches, film shoots, retail pop-ups, workshops, classes, studio sessions, film screenings, musical and theatre performances.

Optional services include an on-site chef, curator/event planner and SmartServe/Food Handler certified staff to make sure your event goes off without a hitch. Our creative dream team is specialized in creating the most unique experiences...so let us build one for you.

We are accepting enquiries for summer rentals of the space as well as weekend rentals throughout the year. Rentals include the use of the gallery and the adjoining workshop space (with a magnificent workshop table that seats 12), washroom, and a fully equipped kitchen.

Sketch Republic…that’s a wrap!

On Tuesdays, students worked with Sam over the course of the year exploring character development, sculpture and drawing techniques, based on the expressed interests of the six involved. The small group dynamic allowed for flexibility and the freedom to tailor curriculum, while offering skills development in an array of media, to which was met with great enthusiasm from the participants.

What Did You Do at School Today?

LITERACY
Lyceum’s Summer Read Recommendations

While stories are threaded through everything we teach at The Lyceum, I have a particular fondness for Friday morning’s novel study class. Using narrative to activate discussions about philosophy, history, drama and the art of literature we spend three hours each week deep-diving into ideas generated by the lecture topics. Students are learning vital skills in critical reflection and long form essay writing. This year, we explored short fiction form representing each decade of the twentieth century followed by Macbeth and To Kill a Mockingbird. These kids inhabited the stories they read and I am utterly charmed every time they make a reference to a character or event from a novel as though it is a real thing (and to them it is). We are in a time where lowered expectations and unmanageable class sizes, in combination with digital distraction, are leading to downward trends in EQAO scores. We need to keep kids reading!

So I chose ten books from our novel study library and told them they could pick one to read over the summer. Most of them chose several. When we return in September, they will be asked to lead the discussion about that book and I will select our first novel assignment from their “pitch”. A culminating art/theatre project by Lyceum students includes handmade puppets, marionettes and sets designed and fabricated by our students during their residency at Gibraltar Point on Toronto Island this spring.
