NEW PRINT RELEASE

“A few years ago, a large black wolf showed up on the riverbank across from our home. It lay down on the bank and watched in peace for a day, and then slipped away.
That wolf has been with me ever since, but it never came back for a visit, so here it is.”
-Roy

Wolf Legend was inspired by Roy’s original painting “Wolf” that is available in person at the gallery and online. Wolf Legend will be available starting October 4th. Learn more in person or online (link in bio).

“When I was a child living in Kitkatla, I often fell asleep to the sound of drumming. It was the drumming of a basketball on the floor of the gym next to our house. And so it was that I was introduced to a game I grew up to play and love, a game that was born in Canada and is now played all over the world.
I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to portray basketball through my art.I can only muse that there is a time and place for everything.
With the retirement of Michael Jordan, a great player who loved the game and played it with all his heart, it seems that I can comfortably create this work. I am also reminded of life’s challenges and how we can overcome them with our will and our heart’s desire to succeed. Aim High refers to aiming for the moon and getting over the fence.”

Roy was featured in this month’s Tofino Time! Written by Susie Doré, Roy talks about the gallery, his journey as an artist, and the inspiration for his art.

The article writes, “Sitting in a rowboat, his grandfather asked Roy what he saw. After describing the obvious, his grandfather pushed him further. ‘Can you look again and tell me what you respect?’ The second time, Roy noticed the direction of the wind, the changing tide, and how both would help carry the logs home. ‘Okay, now you’re looking, his grandfather said.

That lesson became the foundation of Roy’s art. To respect something, he explains, is to ‘respect,’ to look again. His grandfather also taught him that people are not separate from the land. Their ancestors become part of the earth and remain part of them. ‘You are the land,’ he told Roy.”

Read the whole story in the August issue of the Tofino Time, available all over town.
