David Brandy is an award-w

inning lens-based artist. Brandy's artistic mantra is, "Beauty can be strange and the strange can be beautiful." His passion as an artist is to present man-altered landscapes with the uncanny – the psychological experience of something strangely familiar. His ongoing series, "Newer Topographics", emphasizes the strong sense of isolation humankind feels due to the juxtaposition of natural landscapes with solitary manmade constructs. Brandy’s work was sort-listed for the 2021 Aesthetica Art Prize with an exhibition at York Art Gallery, UK. He received an Emerging Artists by Emerging Curator Award at the 2019 Toronto Outdoor Art Fair. His art sold over-asking in the Curatorial Collection at SNAP 2019 - Toronto’s premier fine art photography auction. He was a short-listed finalist in both the Quest Art 2018 National Art Prize, and the 2017 Salt Spring National Art Prize. Brandy’s art hangs in his collectors’ residences and in commercial space across North America.

Sure, it’s a tad cliché, but “when in Rome” (or in this case Polignano a Mare). I couldn’t resist the rusty patina of this bicycle next to the blue doors (zoom in for a close look at that patina). About an hour after taking this picture I saw the owner riding this bike through the town - the town best known as the home of the man who made the song “Volare” famous.

I feel so fortunate to have stumbled upon this gorgeous exhibition in Rome of images by Paul Strand from his documentation of the Italian village of Luzzara in 1953, a project that resulted in the influential photo-text book Un Paese: Portrait of an Italian Village (1955), with text by his collaborator Cesare Zavattini.

Plus the exhibition includes the ten images from Strand’s Portfolio Four - a posthumously published collection of ten gelatin-silver prints from 1950-1973, featuring images from Sicily, the Hebrides, France, and Egypt. These ten images are from the set of artist proofs sent to Zavattini from Strand’s printer in New York City in 1982. Stunning!
