šŸ“£CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS!
ā€œThe Voice of Marionā€ January – March 2027 (Group Exhibit)

The DEADLINE for Expressions of Interest is November 1st, 2026, at midnight.

Eptek Art & Culture Centre is seeking submissions for the upcoming group exhibit, ā€˜The Voice of Marion’ on display in the main gallery from January to March 2027.

Our current lobby exhibit, ā€œA Nod to Aunt Marionā€ is the launch of an Island-wide visual artist competition in Marion Campbell Hinton’s memory with the generous support of her niece and nephew, Catherine and Bill Callbeck. Work submitted in the competition will be part of a group exhibit titled, ā€œThe Voice of Marion,ā€ to be held at Eptek Art & Culture Centre, over the first three months of 2027. Monetary awards will be presented in a number of categories. The jury consists of acclaimed Island artists Henry Purdy, Grace Curtis, and Maurice Bernard. It is the hope of Catherine and Bill that many Island artists will be inspired to participate in celebration of their aunt Marion.

Island artists can visit ā€œA Nod to Aunt Marionā€ from May 1st – 31st to become acquainted with Marion and determine how they would give her voice through their own work. We welcome submissions from artists at any stage of their career as they are invited to be inspired by the works of Marion in the creation of landscape or still life paintings. Interested artists can receive a submission package by emailing [email protected] or by calling (902) 888-8373.

The Eptek Art & Culture Centre is very excited to announce the opening of the new exhibit, "A Nod to Aunt Marion," a showcase of works by Marion Campbell Hinton, now on display in our Lobby Gallery from May 1st until May 31st.

Marion was a stylish, fun-loving, creative woman for whom an early death in 1973 cut short an artistic vocation.

Hinton was a beloved schoolteacher in Summerside and Tyne Valley who later devoted herself to serving her community through various volunteer organizations. Hinton's artistic side was brought to life when she became a member of the Barton Art Club, organized by fellow Islander and internationally acclaimed artist, Georgie Read Barton. Hinton loved that the art club travelled across the Island to capture the beauty of the landscape on canvas. One of her favourite areas to paint was the scenery around her cottage in Stanley Bridge, detailing the beautiful lupins that she and her husband, Richard, helped spread across the Island. Hinton was a diligent student of still life and landscape painting and Read Barton's influence is apparent in her work. Since her passing, Hinton's paintings have been greatly loved by her family over the decades.

"A Nod to Aunt Marion" is the first time Hinton's work is being shown publicly in a solo exhibit, thanks to the desire of her niece and nephew, Catherine and William (Bill) Callbeck, to have her art reach a wider audience, and as a thanks for the important role Hinton played in their lives.

This exhibit also marks the launch of an Island-wide visual artist competition in Hinton’s memory, with the generous support of Catherine and Bill. Island artists are invited to be inspired by the works of Hinton in creating landscape or still-life paintings; those works will be part of a future exhibition, "The Voice of Marion," at Eptek in January 2027. Interested artists can receive a submission package by emailing [email protected] or by calling (902) 888-8373.

Eptek Art & Culture Centre is open from 10am-4pm Tues-Fri and 12pm-4pm on Sundays. Admission is by donation. See you soon!

What is there to do on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Summerside? Have no fear, we've got you!

How about the showing of a silent film partly set in the London Underground?

What if there's also music provided by pianist and composer Max Keenlyside, performed on the baby grand piano?

What if the gallery is also filled with modern, bright quilts and it feels really welcoming and cozy? And, the lobby is filled with lovely paintings of landscapes and still lifes, and there are also snacks. (Tell me you didn't start singing "Let's all go to the lobby" just now.)

Can you do that? Go to the cinema and also get to listen to a concert and also get to see exhibits? Today, you can!

See Anthony Asquith's film Underground, hear Max Keenlyside at 1 pm at Eptek Art & Culture Centre.

Brought to us (all the way to Summerside) by the folks at Roving Picture Shows šŸ“½ļø and Island Jazz šŸŽ¹

Please note that Eptek Centre will be closed on Thursday, April 30th because all of the staff members will be participating in the Provincial Heritage Fair. We’re looking forward to seeing and celebrating all the projects that students from across the island have worked so hard on this year.

The site will reopen on Friday, May 1st, at 10 am.

Know any kiddos who’d like to join in on the fun? There’s still time to sign up.

This Sunday, May 3rd, at 1pm Roving Picture Shows is coming to Summerside for the very first time for a film screening here at Eptek! Details below:

"Pianist Max Keenlyside will perform a live improvised score for "Underground", a love triangle tragedy about two men who fall in love with the same woman they meet on the London Underground, directed by Anthony Asquith and starring Brian Aherne, Elissa Landi, and Cyril McLaglen.

Asquith is perhaps best remembered today for his lavish adaptations of classic British works for the screen, such as the 1952 film version of "The Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde, the 1938 film version of "Pygmalion" by George Bernard Shaw, or the adaptation of "The Browning Version" by Terence Rattigan—one of the rare films to win prizes at both the Cannes Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival.

But before these landmarks of British cinema, Asquith started his career in the silent era, directing some of the best films made in the UK during that period. This time, we are showing "Underground", but you shouldn’t be surprised to see his other silent films in our programming soon.

This screening is presented in collaboration with Island Jazz as part of our Cine-Concert series."

Tickets will be available at the door or right now online:
