Red Brick Common The old brick school built in 1925, using Scottish architectural design; it has a hip-gable roof and a bell tower.

The school was Stony Plain’s first regional high school and was in full operation until 1949. After extensive renovations and landscaping, the school was reborn as the Multicultural Heritage Centre, a Provincial Historic Site. Alongside the red brick schoolhouse stands the Oppertshauser House. Built in 1910, it is architecturally unique due to its unusual European style roof. The Oppertshauser House is a Municipal Historic Resource, which interprets the urban aspect of our local heritage in the setting of a well-established Stony Plain family. Tour the museum, art gallery, pioneer cabin, artisan shop, and the Oppertshauser House as well as the outdoor gardens, and amphitheatre. There are still a few weeks left to see 'Held in Balance', the remarkable solo collection from Steve R. Mitts.

At the core of this series is a continued commitment to quiet, contemplative moments that have long anchored Steve's practice. Subject matter and structure exist in careful harmony, emphasizing essential elements of each painted narrative without isolating them. These works hold stories within stories, curious and playful in their unfolding, yet detailed, reflective, and inviting.

'Held in Balance' will be on display until October 27, 2027. ✅

Wishing everyone a beautiful Thanksgiving. We will be closed Monday October 12.

Steve's hope for his current exhibition at the Red Brick Common, 'Held in Balance,' is that it leaves viewers with a deeper understanding of how the delicate nature of emotion can be expressed through hard form, and how the two can exist as one.

Throughout this series, softness and hard edges work together in a dialogue between rawness and refinement, revealing the balance that can emerge when seemingly opposing qualities are brought into harmony.

See the collection for yourself at the Red Brick Common Public Art Gallery until October 27, 2026 ❤️

Before Stony Plain became the community we know today, the Oppertshauser family was helping shape its story.

In 1906, the Oppertshauser Hardware Store was moved closer to the railway and the growing townsite. A few years later, in 1910, local businessman and civic leader Henry Oppertshauser Sr. built a home for his family. The Oppertshausers owned three local businesses, helping put down roots in a young community.

Today, the Oppertshauser House is a municipal historic resource and living museum. Its collection offers a glimpse into local life from the 1890s through the 1930s and into the story of a family whose home and businesses helped shape Stony Plain.
