in baseball history Dave Stieb (CBHFM class of 2005) threw the Toronto Blue Jays’ first (and still only) franchise no-hitter.

In 1988, Stieb suffered through losing a pair of no-hitters in back-to-back starts, both of which were lost with two outs in the 9th inning! If that wasn’t heartbreaking enough, Stieb then lost a perfect game in 1989, again with only one out remaining in the 9th. Stieb was knocking on the door of perfection, and he’d been so close so many times!

At last, on September 2, 1990, in a game against the Cleveland Indians, Stieb forced Jerry Browne to line out to right field for the final out of the Blue Jays’ first franchise no-hitter. The following day, the headline which ran in the Toronto Star’s Sports Section summed it all up perfectly… “Finally!”

Hall of Famer Dave Shury was born on September 2, 1930 in Wilkie, Saskatchewan.

Shury was also the driving force behind a successful campaign to secure government funding for Canadian baseball, which was critical in establishing Baseball Canada. For his efforts, he was named the first life member of Baseball Canada in 1972.

Great day for Fergie

It was the greatest all-around performance of Fergie Jenkins’ major league career.

And in my opinion, it’s the greatest all-around performance by a Canadian in an MLB game.

It happened 55 years ago today.

What a great HoF career

43 years ago today, Tony Fernandez made his MLB debut with the Toronto Blue Jays.

He pinch-ran for Cliff Johnson in the eighth inning and later flied out to right field in the ninth in his first MLB at bat.

The Blue Jays lost 9-8 to the Detroit Tigers in 10 innings at Exhibition Stadium.

Hall of Famer Tommy Burgess was born on September 1, 1927 in London, Ontario.

His finest minor league season was with the Triple A Rochester Red Wings in 1953 when he hit .346 with 22 homers and 93 RBIs.

Hall of Famer John Ducey was born on August 31, 1908.

For his efforts, Ducey was named Edmonton’s Sportsman of the Year twice (1954, 1957) and was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 1980. He served in a prominent role with the Edmonton Oldtimers Baseball Association until he passed away in 1983. After his death, the Edmonton Trappers (Triple A club) renamed their ballpark in his honour.

Jordan Romano (Markham, Ont.) has moved into third place in the all-time Canadian MLB saves rankings.

Tristan Peters (Winkler, Man.) recently belted home runs in five straight games.

A legend became the first Canadian baseball player to be featured on a Sports Illustrated cover 55 years ago.

It's the great Scott Richmond's birthday.

And it's the 27th anniversary of a Blue Jay great's MLB debut.
