The board and staff of the museum are grieving the loss of our long serving board member, the venerable Pat Scott. Mrs. Scott was a tireless and outspoken advocate of the museum, serving for decades as a volunteer and board member. She organized fundraisers, facilitated community connections, sat on sub-committees, and kept us entertained at meetings with her recollections of community life in decades past. She was a force to be reckoned with, someone you absolutely wanted on your side. And we were so glad to have her on ours. Our thoughts are with her family at this time.

Mystery #4 stumped many of our "From the Back Room" exhibit viewers, and led to some really creative guesses! Visitors guessed this could be: a telescope, a muffler, a lighting device, a candle holder, a time capsule, a clothes steamer, or something used to blow air into a stove to get it started. This item is ....an egg candler! Egg candlers are used to check whether an egg has been fertilized.

Drop by the museum to check out our artifact guessing game, as well as other weird and wonderful items from our collection in "From the Back Room". We are open Monday-Friday 9am-2pm, and Saturdays from 9am-1pm.

Mystery Item #3 in our "From the Back Room" artifact guessing game generated several interesting ideas: whisky snifter, tiny egg cup (for tiny eggs!), and a medicine cup. This item is an eye wash cup used to flush the eye with medicine before drops became more common. The contoured top of the glass is shaped perfectly to rest up against the open eye.

A sunny summer weekend calls for a refreshing beverage! North Star Beverages started in Prince Rupert in 1937, expanding to include a Smithers location at the corner of Queen Street and Fourth Avenue in 1954. North Star was an authorized bottler of Coca-Cola and seven other soft drink flavours.

Check out these bottles and more objects from our collection on display as part of our "From the Back Room" exhibit! We are open Saturday 9am-2pm.

2026 marks 10 years of our Collections Online website. The available content has grown with each passing year, and we are excited to share that we have just added 2400 items from the Telkwa Museum to the website! We are proud to support the work of the volunteer-run Telkwa Museum, and to help make their collections accessible to researchers and our local community.

Item #2 in our exhibit guessing game stumped a lot of visitors - although to be fair, without the ability to give it a shake they were at a bit of a disadvantage! Visitors guessed this might be a baby rattle, or a musical instrument like a maraca. This item is....(drum roll please!)....a darning egg! It was used to stretch or support a sock, glove, mitten or other item while holes were sewn back together.

Happy long weekend! The Museum is OPEN tomorrow (Aug 1) for regular hours, 9am-2pm. We will be closed Sunday and Monday to allow staff to enjoy the long weekend with their families.

Summer is wedding season, and have we ever got a looker of a wedding dress on display! This vibrant blue dress was worn by three women in the same family over nearly 100 years. Donated in 2025, this dress is one of the more recent items added to our collection featured in our special exhibit "From the Back Room". Drop by to learn more about its story!

Congratulations to the Smithers Legion as they mark their 100th anniversary! Canadian Legions formed in 1926 to amalgamate several veterans' organizations, including the Great War Veterans Associations. Smithers' GWVA branch formed in 1919, and by 1924 had constructed a hall on Broadway avenue between Main and Queen Streets.

One of the first projects of the newly formed Legion branch was the establishment of a veterans' section of the Smithers Cemetery, with plots purchased from funds raised from poppy sales.
