ORANGE SHIRT DAY AT THE ḴAY | SEPTEMBER 30

Join us at the Haida Heritage Centre for National day of truth and reconcilliation — a day to remember, reflect and honour, but also to recognize our resilience and the strength of our people as we continue moving forward together in a positive way.

The doors will be open with FREE ADMISSION throughout the day. Bring the kids, walk through the Centre, spend some time together and enjoy a relaxed day Celebrating at the Ḵay with community.

The CHN's Gaagwiis will be joining us at the centre and set up in one of our classrooms for a drop-in question and answer session with the Council of the Haida Nation. Community members are welcome to stop in, sit down and engage with him about Haida Title Implementation, ask questions and learn more about the work moving forward.

There will be activities for the kids, including a bouncy castle in the Carving Shed, with Parks Canada joining us with actrivities. KISS in Tlell will be here with snacks.

Orange Shirt Day carries a great deal of meaning. Alongside remembering and honouring those who came before us, we want this to be a day where our community can simply be together — where our children can play, our people can visit, questions can be asked, stories and knowledge can be shared, and everyone is welcome through the doors.

September 30th at the Haida Heritage Centre at Ḵay ‘Llnagaay.

Come as you are. Bring your family. Spend some time at the Ḵay.

There is something beautifully nostalgic about stepping into the Welcome House and being reminded of the ways our communities have always gathered, celebrated, and kept one another connected.

From a collection of more than fifty pieces, this installation shares seventeen invitations to potlatches, headstone-moving ceremonies, weddings, and other important gatherings. Before social media, invitations travelled **door-to-door throughout our villages and communities**, with notice boards across the Islands helping spread the word. That tradition of hand-delivering invitations still carries on today, alongside the ways we now connect online.

Also on display is a small selection of prints gifted at potlatches and feasts. For many families on Haida Gwaii, these familiar prints have found their way into our homes over generations—given as payment for witnessing the business conducted at gatherings, carrying the crests of those being honoured, and remaining as reminders of the events, relationships, and responsibilities connecting our families and clans.

For some, these pieces may bring back memories of invitations arriving at the door, celebrations attended with family, or prints that still hang in our homes today. We invite you to spend a little time with the installation during your next visit to the Haida Heritage Centre.

From the collection of Daphne White and the late Martin Williams.

With heavy hearts, we are letting our community know that the Haida Heritage Centre Anniversary Celebration, originally planned for August 22, has been postponed until further notice.

In light of the recent and heartbreaking loss in our community, we recognize that many families, friends, and community members are grieving. Out of respect for the family, and the community of Skidegate, it simply does not feel like the right time to gather in celebration.

We had been truly looking forward to coming together to celebrate another year of the Haida Heritage Centre—our shared history, culture, partnerships, and community. But part of being good neighbours, friends, and community members is also knowing when it is time to stand together in grief, honour those we have lost.

To everyone who had offered their time, talents, food, performances, activities, and support to make this day special, Haawa. We are incredibly grateful for your understanding and for your willingness to celebrate alongside us.

When the time feels right, we look forward to finding a new date and coming together in the spirit this celebration deserves.

For now, our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the family, their loved ones, and the entire community of Skidegate.

Haawa for your understanding, kindness, and continued support.
