We would like to thank everyone who joined us in the Ross-Thomson yard this past Saturday and made the 1st Tiny Turnip Festival such a hit!

The brainchild of Society Director Erin Isaac, aided and abetted by Curator Cady Berardi, this unique festival proved to be a lot of fun for young and old with nearly 40 turnips turned into “gourdgeous” works of art and many little (and big) hands doing turnip-inspired crafts in the community room or playing turnip hole on the lawn. And who knew 150 turnip & molasses cookies – yes, turnip cookies - would disappear so quickly!

Very special mention goes to our awesome festival greeter Nippy, aka Mickayla Peters, who received much admiration not just for her friendly smile but also for her stylish choice of footwear. Another special mention goes to Jay Pilzer, local singer, songwriter and storyteller, for a one-of-a-kind turnip tune created for and performed exclusively at the Tiny Turnip Festival. A big thank you as well to Erin’s parents, Teresa and Steve, who travelled all the way from Saskatchewan to get volunteered on the waterfront, lol.

And now for the big announcement – the winner of the Turnip Blossom Contest is Jane Buchanan, with her adorable carved entry, Turny the Turnip! She also has the honour of being our first carver of the day. Congratulations and well done to Jane who took home the much sought-after Turnip Stuffy!

Again, our thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the 1st Tiny Turnip Festival. The masterminds are already planning for next year!

Although it was a very breezy day on Shelburne’s waterfront yesterday, it certainly didn’t deter the huge crowds from enjoying the NS Giant Pumpkin Festival & Regatta!

A big thank you and well done to the Shelburne Events Committee as well as hearty congratulations for another fantastic and very successful festival! We appreciate all the hard work, planning and long hours that went into organizing every activity and event, and we are very grateful for your enthusiasm and your unwavering dedication.

Thank you for sharing our pride in this wonderful community!

Start with a delicious breakfast at the Birchtown Community Centre, then head in to the NS Giant Pumpkin Festival & Regatta for a pumpkin-full of exciting and family activities on the Shelburne waterfront beginning at 10 am. Don’t forget to stop by the Ross-Thomson yard for the Tiny Turnip Festival and enjoy turnip carving, stories, songs, games, crafting and the crowning of turnip royalty!

The NS Giant Pumpkin Festival & Regatta starts today!

The festival, held on Shelburne’s waterfront today, Friday 9 October and tomorrow, Saturday 10 October 2026, features a full line-up of fun, family-oriented and free events.

On Saturday, don’t forget to drop by the Ross-Thomson House & Store Museum, as we celebrate the Tiny Turnip Festival from 10 am – 4 pm. Learn a little history, try your hand at carving, hear some great stories, sing along to turnip tunes with Jay Pilzer, play fun games, do some crafting and crown a Turnip Blossom Prince!

It's going to be a memorable weekend on Shelburne's beautiful waterfront!
