Now Showing: Simon Zhang — Infusions: The Paralleled Process 🎨

We’re excited to welcome Toronto-based artist and designer Simon Zhang to Atelier Ironwood with Infusions: The Paralleled Process, a captivating collection of abstract mixed-media works.

Zhang’s practice brings together ink, rice paper and acrylic, balancing spontaneity with structure and intuition with intention. His unique “Paralleled Process” begins with two separate visual experiences—textured acrylic compositions and spontaneous ink formations on rice paper—which are then thoughtfully combined to create layered, atmospheric paintings.

Originally from China, Zhang moved to Canada in 1988 and brings a rich background in fine art, stage design, architecture and interior design to his work. His decades of experience designing spaces have shaped his sensitivity to composition, movement, atmosphere and the emotional impact of space.

Nature is a constant source of inspiration, but Zhang doesn’t attempt to recreate landscapes literally. Instead, he translates light, movement, texture, colour and atmosphere into abstract compositions that feel like landscapes of memory and sensation.

At the heart of the exhibition is Zhang’s philosophy of “Infusions”—the meeting of chaos and control, freedom and structure, spontaneity and intention. The result is work that feels both energetic and meditative, inviting you to slow down, look closer and find your own interpretation.

His approach positions abstraction as both an act of discovery and a deeply contemplative experience.
