I wrote a longer post about my summer and the start of fall. There’s lots to catch up on, but I’ve since deleted it. I kept the final notes. Some days, it feels better to lean into less:

This summer I have had the great honour and privilege to lead workshops with my friend Teresa on her property. In our recent firing I tested new forms, glazes and a new clay body.

These small vessels are a new, looser form, glazed with a pink shino over a dark clay body. I am all in on this direction.

I tested this pink shino on a lighter clay body, where the pink was more pronounced. The variation on this pairing of glaze and clay is what draws me in. It gives the surface a sense of movement and the subtle pink is a quiet delightful surprise.

I am feeling the pull to post on here. Strange how this platform can feel like a responsibility. I definitely don't like the hold it has on me. Most days, it just feels like noise. Too much of everything on here.

It's just a point of view that comes from wanting more real life. Less screen.

(I've said all of that before.)

We reveal so much of ourselves on here. I am a part of it too. Some days, that makes me uncomfortable—as someone consuming it and feeding it.

Yet, here I am. Thinking about and wondering how all of you are.

I have had a busy summer. I stepped outside of my studio practice and have met new people. Potter people. Fired a couple kilns other than my own. Taught a firing workshop and am ready for another at the end of September.

I've grown some massive tomatoes and have only hand-watered 5 times. Weeds everywhere, but there is abundance in my harvests.

There has been very little rest, and I'd like some rest, but we have Earle, and Earle is keeping me keen on routine and structure. He's making me better and anxious all at the same time. He's a slow burn with the temperament of a clown.

I have begun production for my final fire of the year. And, for some reason, the colour pink is on my mind.

We are both happy and well. Life is golden.

So, there you have it, my contribution to this machine.

Life has been all swirl lately. Swirly mind. Swirly focus. Swirly Burly Earlie.

We have a new dog. And his name is Earle.

The story is long, and today is not the day that I am going to tell it. And truthfully, the past doesn’t matter. The present is that he lives here with us, and we adore his Swirly Burly ways.

The transition has been slow, for his past was tough. But we look forward. We have so many steps to take before we blend all our dogs; each has their own emotional needs. We are taking our time. One paw in front of the other, we are giving it our all.

In honour of all the beautiful canine souls that have graced our lives and made us better, I have made dog bowls. Various sizes and colours. All $55.

$5 from every bowl sold will be donated to Carter's Forever Rescue & Sanctuary.

Brenda is the founder and owner of Carter’s Rescue, and she has devoted much of her life to rescuing dogs. She is the real deal, in it for no reason other than her heart can’t look away from a soul in need. She has seen tragedies that you and I will never know. Her rescue runs on donations and volunteers.

She has mentored me through some difficult days with Earle. Not because he is a bad dog—not an inkling of bad in him—but because helping a dog heal from human failure takes emotional strength and resilience, and some days it takes everything from you.

I have adopted two dogs through Brenda, and now Earle is our third Carter’s dog. Although Earle never officially made it to Carter’s, it is because of Brenda that I was able to bring him home.

In honour of all good dogs, help us help Carter’s.

We still have 2 available spots for the Wood Soda Fire Guided Experience coming up in August. September is sold out.

Here are the details:

GUIDED WOOD SODA FIRE
Lynden, Ontario
August 2–4 + August 9

I am co-hosting a guided wood soda fire at Teresa Parente's beautiful homestead in Lynden, ON.

This experience is for potters who already have some clay experience and are comfortable preparing their own work. Participants must have access to their own bisque kiln, clay, glazes, and making materials.

The experience includes:

• an introduction to the basic principles of wood soda firing
• guidance around clay bodies, glazes, wadding, and surface considerations
• participation in loading the kiln
• a 24-hour wood soda fire
• an assigned 6-hour firing shift
• unload day
• a wood soda fire handbook to help prepare your work
• light snacks and beverages on fire day
• a shared meal after unload

Participants must be available for load-in, their assigned firing shift, and unload.

This is not suitable for beginner potters, but it is a thoughtful opportunity for those wanting to better understand atmospheric firing through direct experience.

From Ashley No. 3 beautiful burnt sienna surfaces emerged. I am exploring new mug forms. A small batch of these were made. The handles have a slight lift. To me they are comfortable, I suppose that's what is to be expected when you make the mug and pre-fit the handle to your hand, but as I have written before, no handle is a one-size-fits-all. So, you'll have to try them on for size. ;) I won't have new work available this weekend, there is still too much post fire work to catch up on. The following week I will have the gallery flipped and ready.

Last year, I met a wonderful group of potters. The connection came through Donn Zver. The short version of the long story is that one of Donn’s students purchased a gorgeous homestead, and on that property, the new owner, Teresa, inherited several kilns, one being a wood kiln. We fired up Ashley, the hybrid Bourry-style kiln, and learned the hard way that she wasn’t built to fire efficiently or effectively. I say that as if it were no sweat. But when your kiln doesn’t fire effectively, you lose an impactful amount of time, money and work, and you lose your love of the process. I volunteered to help get her going again. Through the guidance and wisdom of Justin Lambert, we made adjustments, laid bricks, and loaded her back up. What a gem she is to fire! Teresa is now the proud kiln momma to Ashley, the sweet, easy kiln to master. I guided my new friends through their first fire in the newly amended kiln, and the results were better than my expectations allowed me to set. It’s got me dreaming all kinds of dreams. But more on that some other time, some other time soon. For now, I am back in my studio, sanding work from Woodrow No 29. Holy heck, 29 fires already! It’s not likely I will have the shop ready for this weekend’s gallery hours, but I will get there for the following weekend. A little bit from Ashley No. 3 will also grace the shelves. She provided some of my favourite pieces.
