Welcome to another Throwback Thursday! This week, we're taking a look at the island's windmill, located just behind Covenhoven.

Designed by Montreal architect Edward Maxwell and built in 1895, the windmill features a distinctive Dutch-inspired design that reflected Sir William Van Horne's Dutch heritage. The design includes wood-shingled walls, a rounded shape, a conical roof, small gabled dormers, and a sturdy fieldstone foundation.

While it looks like a traditional windmill, it was not powered by the wind. Kerosene engines helped provide running water to the main residence from an underground storage tank.

This archival photo shows the windmill as it appeared in 1914. More than 100 years later, the structure still stands and remains a familiar feature of the landscape around Covenhoven.

Nature Notes: Look closely along the forest floor on Ministers Island and you may spot Goldthread (Coptis trifolia), a small woodland wildflower with delicate white blooms and distinctive three-part leaves. Its name comes from its bright yellow, thread-like roots. Goldthread thrives in the cool, shaded forests of the Island and is a lovely example of the small treasures waiting to be discovered beneath the trees.
