Tuesday Nature Notes - The colourful lupins commonly seen on Ministers Island and across the Maritimes are known scientifically as Lupinus polyphyllus (large-leaved lupin). Although they are not native to the region, having been introduced from western North America, they have become a beloved part of the Maritime landscape. As members of the pea family, lupins help improve soil by adding nitrogen, making them well-suited to grow in poor, sandy soils. Their vibrant blooms also provide an important food source for bees and other pollinators, however, they are not edible and the contain alkaloids that are toxic. Interested in learning more? We’re pleased to share a few photos from this weekend’s Roots & Remedies Walk & Talk with Jessica Gauvin.
During this engaging experience, Jessica shared her knowledge of local plants and traditional remedies while encouraging participants to deepen their connection to the land. She spoke about the value of self-sufficiency, mindfulness, and caring for our well-being, both mentally and physically.

It's Throwback Thursday! Today we’re taking a peek from the only balcony at Covenhoven, located just outside Miss Addie’s bedroom.

Overlooking the beautiful grounds and waters surrounding Ministers Island, this balcony offered a quiet place to enjoy the fresh sea air and spectacular Bay of Fundy views more than a century ago. Today, it remains one of the many charming details that help bring the home’s history to life.

One of the most remarkable things about Ministers Island is the incredible variety of landscapes visitors can experience in just 500 acres. Shaped by wind, water, soil, and time, the Island is a patchwork of ecosystems - including coastal shorelines and cliffs, forests, meadows, fields, and wetlands.

As we begin exploring the Island’s natural plant life each Tuesday on our posts, we wanted to point out that not everything here is native to the island. Sir William Van Horne had a passion for horticulture and frequently ordered fruits, vegetables, trees, and shrubs to enhance the estate grounds.

Attached is a fascinating example: an April 1910 plant order preserved in the National Archives of Canada. This historic document offers a glimpse into Van Horne’s vision for the landscape and helps explain why some of the plants found on the estate today are not naturally occurring on the Island.
