Exhibition Announcement: what on Earth is holding the loop up? by Lauren Chipeur will opening to visitors on September 3. Lauren’s work moves between photography, ceramics, installation, casting and dyed paper, following her curiosity as she investigates our relationship with – Sulphur.
It was the colour that initially drew Calgary artist Lauren Chipeur to sulphur. The yellow is so brilliant that it looks like the product of human imagination. But sulphur is a fundamental element in our world – it is an essential element in our bodies, in agriculture and in industry. It exists in man-made piles that rival the Egyptian pyramids in volume as well as within the humble onion. It is the sulphonic acid produced by cutting an onion that makes us cry.
What is sulphur, how is it used, how does it travel from onions to me to the land to industry? Tracing these interconnected threads, what on Earth is holding the loop up? navigates the complexity and scale of our entangled modern world.
Stop by to see what on Earth is holding the loop up? from September 3 to October 17.
And be sure to save your spot in Lauren’s artist-led onion skin dyeing class on September 17. See our website for more details.
