Your community arts centre home to artists & musicians & the people who love to celebrate them. The Board of Education used the building until 1985.

The Old School House Arts Centre houses ten shared Resident artist's studios and is an established public art gallery and art learning centre. Three galleries exhibit Vancouver Island talent, and creative educational programming for all ages and abilities are held throughout the year. The Gallery Gift Shop features the work of over 150 Island Artists. The music program offers a robust concert series throughout the year featuring an eclectic range of genres from acclaimed musicians. The Old School House is a non-profit charitable organization that provides vibrant community programming that is open to all - regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, religious affiliation, financial status, age, sexual orientation, political belief, or physical limitation. Our History:

The Old School Arts Centre heritage building was built in 1912 and served the educational needs of Qualicum Beach for both elementary and secondary school until 1952, when a new secondary school was built. The building reverted to an elementary school only until 1976, when a new school was built. As the wrecking ball swung closer and closer to the building, dedicated citizens of the community banded together and formed a non-profit cultural association. With the help of many volunteers, countless hours of hard work and fundraising events, the building was renovated and opened to the public in February 1988

Rooted in land, tradition, and a lifelong love of colour.🎨

Beam Paints grew from Anong Beam’s early teachings in Indigenous pigment traditions, inspired by her parents, artists Carl Beam and Ann Beam, and her connection to M’Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island.

Today, each handmade watercolour blends lightfast pigments, tree sap, gum arabic, and Manitoulin honey to create rich, saturated colours made with care.

Rich colour, thoughtful craftsmanship, and plastic-free packaging—made with care from pigment to paint.

Today we are closed to honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and to remember children, the survivors, and their families.

We believe deeply in listening to our community. Carrie Reid of Qualicum First Nation has shared so many insightful talks with us and through her, the magic of language is reinforced. There are words in the pentl'ach language to describe the most elegant and poetic of moments. Did you know that in Hul'q'umi'num', a sister language to pentl'ach, there is one word for the light that hits a fin in the water, and another for the light that hits a fin out of the water?

The traditional language of Qualicum First Nation is pentl'ach, a Coast Salish language. Their community kept its words alive and carried them forward.

In 2023, under the leadership of Chief Michael Recalma, the Qualicum First Nation language team celebrated the official reawakening of pentl'ach. Their team, including Jessie Recalma and Mathew Andreatta (the designer of our beautiful banners!), continues the careful work of bringing the language home. We learn more every day from Carrie and from the Qualicum First Nation, and we are in awe of the work they do.

Learning to see the beauty of this land through their teachings has been a great gift.

Remembering Gerry Hebert and his beautiful Treasure Boxes.
After retiring, Gerry turned his love of woodworking into a lifelong passion. What began as a hobby grew into a career creating exquisite, handcrafted treasure boxes from exotic and domestic hardwoods.

Gerry created pieces that will continue to be treasured for generations.
His craftsmanship, creativity, and passion for woodworking live on in every box he made.
