This piece began its journey decades ago. Crafted from a remarkable Flame Maple Burl that was collected in the 1940s or 1950s, the wood was gifted to us by a family from Port Alberni with one simple wish: that it be used for something beautiful

Through the collaboration of Lorne Hussey and Jeremy Humpherville, this vision was brought to life. Their talents complement one another, resulting in a piece that showcases the strength of both artists and the beauty in working together

We are proud to introduce the first editions in our Functional Art collection: The Killer Whale crib board, “Family”, and the Mother and Baby Humpback Whale board, “The Guardian”, both designed by Jeremy Humpherville.
Our vision for these pieces is to create meaningful keepsakes — functional works of art that become treasured family heirlooms and memorable gifts for generations to come. Each piece is carefully crafted to be both beautifully displayed and enjoyed in everyday use!
Made from premium solid woods, these crib boards are designed for a lifetime of enjoyment. Every board includes precision-machined metal pegs and a quality deck of cards presented in a compact case. The carvings are high-quality reproductions of original artwork, much like a fine art print, and will be available exclusively through Coastal Carvings Art Gallery.
Creating functional art at this level takes time, care, and craftsmanship. We are excited to continue developing new designs and look forward to sharing future pieces as they are completed.

We are pleased to introduce a special new space at Coastal Carvings! Our new room has many gift options including limited editions and reproductions in many mediums from local Artists. Our goal has always been to have a little something for everyone. Now the travellers who pass through, families and our corporate clients can enjoy beautiful artistic creations. This room is also home to some unique collaborative work we’ve had the opportunity to be a part of over the last couple years. We hope everyone can now experience a little piece of Coastal Carvings!

It was a honour to work with Robert Van Pelt in the creation of PEETZ Canada 100th anniversary edition fishing reel. A major accomplishment is an understatement for any company that celebrates a 100 year anniversary. This was much more than just handing over a design to add on to the 100 limited edition reels. We wanted to create something very special in-house at Coastal Carvings; a work of art with new materials and a unique approach to match the Peetz 100 year milestone.

Our approach took over a year and could not have been accomplished without adding new technology to Coastal Carvings: a very high precision CanCam CNC Machine. Coastal Carvings acquired the CNC in order to translate our original design and engrave all of the fine detail at such a tiny scale. Executing the intricate carved designs into the solid brass for the reels was accomplished with a 20 thousands of an inch tool!!! The result of the collaboration is “functional art” worthy of the finest of collections.

We are pleased to reveal the PEETZ Canada "100 year anniversary edition reel". Each reel is hand built with the same quality PEETZ Canada have always been known for. The reels are then inlayed with the Salmon design that has been engraved into solid brass. You can watch the entire collaborative process and the creation of the reel in Season 2 of ‘Coastal Carvings’ documentary series on APTN…coming soon.
